Hello All,

Here is a photo of a very clean 1984 HJ47 here in Adelaide with factory air con which died an early death last week.

This ia a real photo; it is not photo-shopped. This guy was 10' in the air, came down and rolled. He was alright, but the troopy was toast.

Cheers,

Josh

Hey where can I get one of those troopy t shirts I saw on Mud a couple months ago? Can't seem to locate them.

Thanks guys!

HJ47 Registry

Was poking around and found this thread, so decided to join and register my 1982 HJ47 Troopy, VIN HJ47019833. It is a H41 4 speed, RHD, H2 diesel, with drums all around, Australian import now registered in South Dakota. Has about 320K kilometers on the clock and currently undergoing some major rust removal. I got it in September from a couple in Santa Cruz CA who after two years finally gave up fighting with the California DMV trying to register her there. I am looking forward to getting her on the road and using her as so far I have only put a little over 15 kilometers on her.

Here she is! I registered her a bit ago, and may need to correct a few points, Drums all the way, no PS, but it has air! full floater rear, still has jump seats, front seats are beyond SHOT!!! Was running veggie when I got it, 5 original split rims, maybe a slight lift, SWEET ROO BAR on the front, RUNS PHENOMINAL no smoke, cold starts are EZ, Tranny is TIGHT!, everything but the windshiled squrter is working, but the air needs a charge. and a little TLC polishing with my OCD!!! Will post up some more pics soon.

Oh yeah, mine is not P/S... just if you wanna update the registry.

Also can some post up pictures of stock front seats for the 82-84 troopys? Are they the same as say a 79 fj40 buckets? mine has 2 old buck frames with plywood and foam covering, and I am looking to get stock style original style seat for the ole girl. Appreciate the help

I will correct yours. No, the '79 seats in the states do not recline and they are buckets. They did not begin to recline until '81. Your seats would have been 60/40 splits with a driver's seat which reclines and a passenger seat which does not. They look like these in my LX, only grey vinyl rather than cloth.

OK, then the seat frames that are in my 84 are not original then, a MUD member sent me a pic of some 79 FJ40 seats that I could pick up for relatively cheap ship and then have to recover... I would really prefer to have orignal style that came in the 84... know anywhere I could source some from?
Thanks for the help!

Love the brown interior!

83 FJ45 RHD in Louisiana

I have this rig registered but did not realize no pics posted. It is a 83 AU RHD with PS and AC. Odo shows 170kil. I would like the forums thougts on a lift...This ride is pretty stock (can you tell me if those are original toyota rims?) but I am contimplating putting a 4 inch Hells Creek suspension with 33's---A local fj40 owner has the Hells Creek suspension and the look and ride are exceptional but I am a little hesitant to mess with this troopie...what are your thougts?? Thanks Cruiserfien

I really love the tinted windows look. I plan to go that route on my HJ45.

I don't think those are the rims that came on the truck. I think all Australian market Troop Carriers came with split rims. Those may be Toyota rims (doubtful) but I doubt they are original for the truck.

Definitely not factory rims, probably 'Sunrasia' rims, which are popular down here. They are simply copies of the American Racing white spokes, and are made in Australia, Thaiwan, etc. They are so much more common down here than the original split rims that they might as well be factory.

Having said that, I would never, ever, ever run split rims again; original equipment or not.

As for the lift - I say do it. I have a 2.5" OME lift on my troopy, and it is wonderful. I don't know anything about Hells Creek, but a 4" lift would look really nice on a troopy I think - especially yours.

If you do it, please post new pics!

Josh

I had original suspension on my 47, 27 years old and had a little starboard side lean, scary around turns. I put a new OME suspension kit on and it is certainly much better. I have no other suspension experience to gauge but I'm happy with mine. I took out the third rear spring though which makes a bit of difference on the ride.

Just a little bump, because it has fallen off the first page of the FJ45 section....:D

Troopy Fever

You guys are the pro's and I need help....

Recently I sold my first LC - a 1981 FJ40, which was very nice.

I've realized I can't stand not having an LC and I've loved Troopys since I knew they existed.

I've been looking around at early '80's models and now I can't sleep I want one so bad. :bang:

Any input (on line or via PM) with the following questions would be greatly appreciated:

1. Im in California. Can I register it or must I do it elsewhere? How bad is the nightmare?
2. Diesel or Petrol? Advantages/disadvantages of each? (Is diesel easier to register in California?)
3. Shop for what is here or import myself?

Like most, I don't mind fixing anything, I just want something unabused (within reason) and unmolested. I'll use it for Baja and run it primarily stock.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'm in northern CA and I have two diesel troopies; 81&84. To bring a diesel into CA from out of the country you have to register them in another state first. No way around it. but once here, they're smog excempt.
You can bring a gasser straight in, but it'll need to pass smog and most will require that you find pretty much all the smog stuff. Major pita to deal with.

Try to find one that's already in the USA and look at it in person. Most other places in the world see these rigs as work horses and they get used and abused accordingly. Over here they're a novelty ......

I know of an FJ45 troopy in California which has a 2F from a US Spec FJ60 in it in order to pass all smog requirements. The owner is pretty happy with it, from what he has told me. The FJ45 troopy is cheaper than a similar HJ45/7, so it may be worth going that route. Or, the Vortec implant for a truly great vehicle:D

Also remember that the Australian diesel troopies never came with factory power steering, where the FJ45 troopy often did. Given your 1981 FJ40 probably had power steering, that may be a consideration for you.

It is fairly easy to find a wrecked FJ60 to get the engine out of, where finding a diesel engine (should you need one) is a bit harder in the US.

Finally, the 2H diesel is fairly gutless without a turbo. I have found that a factory 2F troopy has more power than a factory 2H troopy does. True the 2H is not as thirsty, but the fuel economy is still not that great for a 2H, as it is indirect injected. Mine was turbo-charged with a 5 speed, and I still rarely got more-than 17 MPG.

If you find any troopies in Adelaide which you would like me to look at, drop me a PM. Like George said, though, you will have to register it in another state first if you bring it from here in the land of Big Brother.

Hope this helps.
