HJ100 - NJ Inspection Issues

Hi all, hope we're all doing well.
So im still in the battle of getting My HJ100 fully on the road in the Garden state of NJ ...
long story short i managed to import my 'Cruiser' from Norway ... and this is just because I'm a big Diesel fan .. or just an insane person
So i got it all the way up to inspection, got a registration and insurance and all of it, but ... there is always but... i need to pass the NJ inspection and when i went to do it we failed ... and the reason a. the dash in the kilometers ... which is not state that it is a Km so the inspector is looking to put 350k miles as that what it reads on the dash, and the second and biggest thing is they cant connect OBDII to read it but im able to do it using a cheap obd reader ....
Can anyone plz advice ... especially if you had the same challenge in the past?

Dont have the same challenge as you, but you could try an independent shop that does state inspections

Yeah, it will be nice, but imagine you need to be a resident of the state of Montana :-(

You don’t need to be a resident but there are some hoops to jump through and it’s still a bit questionable since you’re technically an NJ resident. Insurance may care. NJ may care. Montana does not care.

However, you should have no problem registering this in NJ. My guess is this guy just didn’t know what he was doing.

There are a bunch of jdm and non-US market vehicles in NJ and there is a big import scene. Just a quick google turns up some resources.

Did you register it through the special title office?

If you’ve done that already I’d call them and ask about the inspection issues you’ve had. They might be able to point you to a specialized or at least more knowledgeable.

There are special inspection stations for this.

Also, the dashboard being in KM only isn’t an issue by itself. It was the fact they couldn’t read the obdii to tell if it was properly functioning. The above info should help you get that resolved.

I said jdm here, looks like yours might be from Europe. Same info applies.

Private inspection stations are an option in NJ too. I’d call an import dealer (quick google looks like there are a few, maybe offer to pay a fee for their time) or maybe OK4wd. ok4wd is based in nj and might know someone that dealt with a similar situation.

it is not an issue in MT,
as stated there are some things that need to be done, but there are companies that help you out
we are more than happy to take your money.

check registration with South Dakota a lot of guys in the military register there, everything is done online.

Put in a MPH dash cluster, HDJ100 arent OBD 2, wont ever be able to read it. They are a older M OBD system, generally need a much better scanner to read it. Dongle to you phone and the right app, Toyota scanner or I could read some stuff from my brother inlaws Snap On scanner.

yes i have a Launch scanner and it sees it perfectly ok, but all of it is to make their 'corporate' scanner work... but i will talk to Local JDM shop and will see what they will tell

Hi, as promised, current update: most 100% ones I went to those private inspection sites in NJ do not have a Diesel certification… the max they can do is a very typical petrol US-registered and prior-inspected cars.
Went to a few different NJ MVC sites , same story "Failed," so in one station, the manager was nice enough and called Trenton and figured out that i need to go a special inspection aka the same one Salvage cars do and they should be able to help. that exactly im looking to do next .... more comming

So, I learned how and where to call to get a proper inspection and go and talk to the right people without wondering all around, as it was happening to me. So if anyone needs this info, I will be happy to share.
Also, with this inspection, I will conclude my process of successfully importing a 1999 4.2 Diesel Toyota Land Cruiser 100 from the EU, and making it 100% road legal in US
