HJ 47 gets a turbo

Tires size

I tried putting the spare 15" wheel from my 62 (33" x 12.5) on the front of the 47 and that def. won't work. So, I'm beginning the process of determining the right wheel offsets and widths etc that will give the truck that look. The stock look is great, but I'm partial to a more aggresive wheel and tire look. I think I have a OME spring pkg, but don't know how many inches it is over stock. It sits higher than my 62 and it has a lift of some sort.

Snorkle installed

i got the snorkle installed today, the exhusat goes in tommorrow.

After I get the exhaust hooked up tommorrow, I'll try to get under the vehicle for pics for future reference. My muffler guy wants me to use my 2 1//2" Magnaflow free-flow stainless muffler. I'm still not sure i want a muffler on this. 2 1/2" all the way, mandrel bent, no muffler,,,, that might let the turbo whine better?? Right now, with a 24" piece of 2 1/2" flex pipe for an exhaust system, it sounds like an Abrams Tank, it whines up and that sounds fantastic. I'm afraid the muffler will kill the turbo wistle.

I got it back from the muffler shop and yes the turbo whine is gone. In fact the truck is pretty quite which is not what I really expected. I may take the muffler out. But the turbo is great and the project is complete now. Next step is the body work and paint. I'm taking a welding class is June so I can do some of the rust repairs myself.

With the stock springs. Measurements from center of hub to fender are 21.5" front 23.5" rear. running stock 2008 FJ cruiser steel wheels, 235/80-17 tires. I just needed to adjust the steering bump stops.

235/80-17 are 32"

2 inch suspension lift will fit 33 inch tyres quite nicely and are enough for most offroad stuff, unless you want to go rather extreme.

I have an Ironman suspension

I thought it was OME. So, I should have atleast a 2" lift. I'd like to run 33" tires and as wide as what's on my 62 (12.5"). I'll have to mess with the bump stops as well. How do you change the steering limits?

The steering stops consist of a bolt on the knuckle side (right in pic) and a bracket on the axle tube (left in pic). Loosen lock nut on the bolt and move in or out depending on tire clearance.

I took the muffler out of my HJ47 with 2.5" exhaust, and my EGT temps dropped about 50 degrees. It was not noisy at all, and the turbo spool seemed a bit quicker. I was impressed with how much better it was with no muffler, for what it's worth.

Thanks for the steering stop tips. I'll do that when I get new wheels and tires.
I think I'm going to take the muffler off. I already had the muffler, so it wasn't a new expense. The sound when it was just a 18" piece of flex pipe off the turbo was fun. I'd like that turbo sound without the extreme loudness. It may be unobtainable. I'll start with removing the muffler and if that doesn't help then maybe down the road a 3" exhaust.

Now i need to get this square plug out

I want to put in a mechanical temp guage, and this appears to be the best spot. This bolt won't budge. It's only been in there 30 years. I've sprayed a pentrant on it for a couple of days and nothing. The problem is getting a wrench on it with any leverage. It's a 14mm wrench size, but obviously it a pipe plug or NPT fitting. Anybody got a idea for a tool or technique?

pics of plug

The frozen plug. do they make a socket for this type of square bolt. If I could get a socket on it, I could use my impact wrench.

They do make square sockets. I bought a set on ebay for exactly that same reason. They aren't called square sockets, there's a name for them that escapes me at the moment. They are 8 point sockets. That might help.

BTW, you won't be able to fit a mechanical temp sender there very well. It's too shallow for the probe in that area. The intake runner gets in the way. You'll need to stack up adapters and then not much of the probe will be in an area with coolant flow.

Thanks Rufus, I'll try another option. Both the thermostat housing and the plug at the rear of the head have electrical senders already. I don't want to remove those, so I'm down to drill and tapping the thermostat housing or putting a matal sleeve in the upper rad hose and tapping a fitting into there. Any other good spots for the temp probe on a 2H, I'm all ears?

Eight point socket? Amaurer showed me a sears socket that's supposed to work. i already ordered a 1.5" adaptor from Summit. I'll post up a picture when I install it.

Cut the muffler out

I spent the afternoon cutting the muffler out on my new 2 1/2" exhaust system. And it was well worth the effort. Now I can hear the turbo and I'm sure the EGT's are going to be lower. The bottom line is the truck sounds like a real turbo diesel now. It sounds like a military truck going down the road. I may even go 3" without the muffler because I fabbed in a piece of flex pipe where the muffler was and that doesn't look too durable from below. But for now, it sounds perfect. If you want quite, use the muffler, if you want a powerful sounding truck; sans muffler!
