Thank goodness IdahoDoug:
The harder you put an oil filter on, the harder it is to come off. IdahoDoug's technique is the correct way to install an oil or any kind of filter that employs a rubber gromet/gasket. Once you get these gaskets snug, the heat of the engine will make them even more tighter. I have strained for 45 min before trying to get filters off 18-wheelers just because some knuckle head put too much elbow grease on it. :flipoff2: This is the only way to go.

The worst car I can remember was a GM transverse V6 with a small filter high on the back side of the engine above a crossmember. Hard enough to get to and always on super tight. I distincly remember having to remove them with an air chisel on two seperate occasions.
I am purposly blocking the memory of the Renault LeCar that required the removal of the A/C compressor to remove the oil filter.

Always lube the gasket and always hand tight. I never need to use a wrench on my vehicles.

Time to show your age..

Gummer, what do you expect from a car with 3 lug nutz? :flipoff2:

for the first time the removing the filter on my 80 was easy, I have a strap style but it does not fit very well, only gets 1/1,000 of a turn each grab takes for ever, the 3 tooths thing works but crushes the can onto the elemnt making it hard to pulll out for examination, brouhgt a 20004 to Autozone and pucked up one of those sockets "AmPro" # T70404, 73MM 14 flutes, fits perfectly, took the filter right out, needed a ~3" extension now I need to fold up a sheetmetal pan to keep the oil off the block and 80 series oil changes will be a snap (as they shold be)

A hillbilly oil change is thinking about a high $$$$ snap-on oil wrench the monent before turning the oil filter with a $3 harbor frieght oil wrench!

over analysis comes to mind here.

IDoug is spot on with his technique and you won't have issues if you follow it :)

Seriously, I have experimented with less and less pressure on the gasket by progressively turning each filter slightly less over the years. Lost my nerve around 1/4 turn from when the gasket touched the block, and never tried anything less. Never had a leak. Even when I do it at 1/3 turn there's a brief struggle sometimes - depending on the kung fu grip status. So try it and free yourself from all that filter wrench mumbo jumbo. Imagine having your filter off in 6 seconds, like opening a fresh jar of peanut butter (caution, this thread not for individuals with allergies to peanuts or other nuts. May contain some peanut parts.)

Eric -

I STILL do something similar to your screwdriver technique with my Honda Accord. For whatever reason, those crazy Japanese engineers decided to put the oil filter at the back of the engine (transverse mount) above the spot where the exhaust pipe goes into the cat which is covered with a braided material (no doubt to catch the oil so it doesn't make a mess). Needless to say, it gets mighty toasty back there if you're not careful.

Becuase of the deisign and position of the filter, even after completely draining the oil, removal of the filter results in about a pint of oil running down the side of the engine and your arm, and onto that braided exhaust pipe. So I took to driving one of those 8-inch gutter nails thru the filter at an angle, so that the oil runs down the nail and I can catch it in a can. The nail then also serves as a way to apply a good amount of torque for removal of the filter if you drive it completely thru. Hillbilly...YES. But functional too!

I have been using these and they are great. Just like an aircraft filter (even have safety wire holes) - stick a 1 inch six point socket onto the end cap and voila. No problems. Hand tighten only, of course! If you wrench tightened one of these you would be in big doodoo at the next filter change.

OK Raven, what's with digging this up one year later? :flipoff2:

Luke, Luuuuuuuuke. Use the Force. Lube the gasket, spin on until it touches the block, then 1/3 turn. My bro in law literally laughed when we changed his oil last week. We took off a filter I had put on and he had only to reach down and spin it back off. First time in his life that's ever happened to him. Scary....

I've used the same Lisle Import Car Filter Wrench for last 15 years. It is designed to be fitted on the end of a 3/8" socket entension, so that you can use any number of extensions and joints to reach those hard-to-reach filters. Mine has never failed in the removal of the smaller oil filters, especially in the import cars. It only fits the 2004 (smaller) filter and not the large LC filter.

This place has the wrench for $10. A bargin consider that I paid over $25 for it years ago!

struggled with this today too! After 3 filter sockets, a filter wrench, a hole punched in two different areas of the filter, and 3 hours of frustration and tool buying errands, the little lady non-chalantly mentioned maybe I should stick a dish washing glove over the filter and try the filter wrench again. voila, off in seconds.
