two questions
1. recommendations for excellent (meaning none better) medium wt hiking boots for women.

2. Hiking/camping gear boots clothes etc. store located in Sydney Australia.

Reason:
My girlfriend lives in Sydney, i am heading down there this summer for about a month or so, and was planning on doing a bush survival course, she is now insisting on going with me but has very diiferent ideas about camping/hiking. (READ: ZERO EXPERIENCE OUTSIDE OF A HOTEL) So i'd like to get her some boots asap to break in as i don't want to hear complaints the entire time.
much thanks

The only way to find which boots work for an individual is for them to try them on. Boots that one man swears by will be another's trip to Hell.

Your GF will need to go to the store and try on several brands of boots until she finds a pair that feel comfortable. If the don't feel comfortable in the store no amount of breaking in will help. Tell her to take her time and walk around the store for a while in each pair she tries. She should also wear the same type of socks she will be wearing with the boots.

i completely agree, the reason for my request for recs, is she has not worn hiking boots before, typically womens boots fit differently then mens, so what womens boots are rec'd? If i send her to a shoe store without some suggestions my concern is that she is going to end up with some lightweight hiking trainers or choose them by appearance. I've heard scarpa makes some good ones but want some opinions. I have worn the same pair of Merrells for close to 20 yrs (obviously resoled) or wear a pair of well worn in Whites. I don't think she'd enjoy the trip if i had Whites made for her as they are pretty tough to break in. Which is why i'm asking for the stores in Sydney so i can at least direct her to someplace that has knowledgeable staff since i'm not there.
Thanks again

I've had most of the expensive hiking/mountaineering boots throughout my life. That being said, nothing is more comfortable and functional than hunting boots.

They are very waterproof, lightweight, sturdy, etc. I was so impressed that I got my wife a pair for hiking (non'camo available), and she loves them...

It might also be worth it to make sure she wears a liner sock as well. Blisters appearing on the trail will always kill any fun.
No experience with women's boots, I've got an old pair of salomons that I love. Danners were always a good boot as well.

I've had boots that were comfortable in the store and then blister machines on the trail (hunting or hiking). I have tough to fit feet...I ended up getting Asolo hiking boots that I also used for hunting.

I prefer, all things being equal, to purchase hiking boots from REI. They have an unconditional guarantee: 100% refund if not happy for any reason. I also believe Cabela's has a similar type of guarantee. And Sierra Trading Post is unconditional guarantee also.

X 2 on the Asolo brand. I bought two idenical pairs and they both have held up very well over the past few years. I alternate them out between walks and hikes here in the Smokys. Luv em
Just about any thing you buy from Cabelas will be very good quality and price efficient. Much better service than a lot of the hiking supply stores too! Good Luck with your trip.

Merril

x2 I've had "hiking boots" of all different varieties and I am currently wearing two pairs of Danner's (not at the same time). One is the Hiker Lite II, which is a short (6") version of their hunting boots, and the other is the foothill which is an uninsulated 8" hunting boot. There are no cushy insoles, or soft rubbery soles, but they are comfortable and provide great support. I have a narrow foot and Danner seems to use a narrow mold (last?) so these boots work for me.

The "tennis shoe" hiking boots/shoes are certainly comfortable in the store
but you need to be careful with the more pliable ones. Once out on a trail you feel every rock and that gets old fast.

However, as mentioned, the best approach is to get her to try on several different sizes and types of boots until she finds the best fit. Shouldn't be too hard since all girls like to shop, right? Good luck.

I have a pair of older Kayland hiking boots. They might have them over there as they are made in Italy. They are stiff, light, waterproof, and comfrotable. I mean VERY LIGHT! Like a tennis shoe to be honest but stiff like a larger boot with great ankle support. I'm not an expert hiker, but they just seemed to be different than some of the other entry level stuff i tried. I found a link for you.

We all know they make good shoes over there in Italy!

x2 on the Merrell's. Very high quality and very comfortable.

i've had this ones for close to a year, and i love them. My ex also has them, and couldnt believe how comfortable they are. But once again, the best thing is to go into a store and try diferent ones. im not sure if they still them them, i know that New Balance took over Dunham. best of luck, and i hope that you have fun in your trip.

thanks for all the suggestions this is what i've been looking for, as for stores i'm still at a loss, as REI is great for here in the states same for Cabela's and the others, but she is in Australia so shipping back and forth is not the easiest thing. She will be back here in may possibly so i can go that route if need be but would like to get her in the spirit or at least thinking about it if i can get her into an outdoor store. I'm getting her a Kifaru pack, although not as large as mine.

Limmer Lightweights. None better at any price, and they are pricey. I like mine.
