From the top of California pass. Views are unreal. Makes you feel really small.

That's ice in the lake. Pics don't show it but the water was so clear you could see the entire chunk of ice, both above and below the surface.

The run down from there is pretty anticlimatic. You head down through corkscrew gulch, which dumps you right onto hwy550. The LA crew took a tight and headed into Ouray for a $4 shower and a hot meal. Town was packed with campers trying to get out of the rain, but we found a spot with a chef from New Orleans that was pretty dang good. Boudin stuffed chop, locally brewed amber and some bread pudding and I was stuffed.

Headed back to camp for some whiskey and a big campfire.

Woke up Sunday morning after another full night of rain. Things were wet, and for that reason and a few others the numbers had dwindled significantly. Was planning on doing Imogene into Telluride but decided to do a quick/easy run and the Ophir Pass into Telluride. Lunch, then hit the road headed home.

Ophir is mostly a gravel road up to a pass just barely above tree line. The valley you come into after crossing the summit is pretty impressive. And at the bottom is a large stand of Aspens. Would be great to do this and Last Dollar one day in the fall when the leaves are turning.

Last pic if you look way into the distance is the town of Ophir. Been there since the 1880s. Bunch of small houses built in the valley, still very much inhabited. Zero cell service.

From here the trip quickly came to an end. Had lunch in Telluride at Brown Dog Pizza was really good. From there we hit the road.

Plan was to head to CO Springs Sunday, but my buddy here had to cancel. Ryan had plans there too, so we parted ways once we got past Monarch pass headed east.

I got tired of running highways, so I pulled up my GPS to look for a 'back' way down to Raton. Wound up taking highway 1 to highway 69 and was not disappointed. It was crazy scenic, and different from everything else we had seen. The road follows a valley between a large and small mountain range. Lots of ranches, rolling hills, meadows, etc framed by mountains on both sides. Was a 100 mile run and I probably saw less than 5 other vehicles. Was a great finish to a good trip. No pics, they didn't do the scope of the scenery justice. I would love to do this run in reverse at sunrise though.

2445 total miles, 7 days.

The video ended right before what was the hardest switchback for me. Very tight with no edge buildup. Of course being in a standard only adds to the adventure.

What happened with the roll over?
 
Guy in a razor got halfway down BBear and decided it wasn't his cup of tea. Turned around and started back up (even though he was past the 1-way only sign) and got to close to the edge, rolled it right over. He was fine, wife had quite a few broken bones. One of the guys leading that day's HIH run ran the whole pass in reverse with medics to help get him down.
 
I forgot id said it yesterday!!!! Alot of nice ones in classifieds


I bet that guy feels awful about the wife.... Stinks.
