Why do I go to the same damn beach, year after year, when there are so many places to go in the US. The North American Continent is the prettiest in the world, and I have damn near flown over each continent a few times.

This.

The drive up from Abq always seems to take twice as long as it should...275 miles took us 6 hours, and we got into camp at 3:30. Found a good spot up on top of the hill and setup. Wanted to be high because it always rains. Our group of 6 trucks were the first ones in the area. First nights camp.

Setup the grill and cooked up a steak, some sautéed broccoli and baked beans. Didn't get a pic because I may or may not have had too much to drink and forgot. Sat by the campfire for a few hours and turned in about 11.

Trucks came in all night, and by 6am the next morning our little end of the campsite was full.

Coffee and bagels for breakfast, drivers meeting at 9, then headed out for the day's trails.

First run was clear lake, an hours drive up shelf roads to a crystal clear lake at around 12,000 feet. There was still a lot of snow on the ground, and it was in the 50s up there. Went on a hike or two, took a pic, ate lunch, and hung out until around 1:00. The drive down off the mountain is crazy scenic.

How many vehicles are there? Are y'all all in the same trail?

47 trucks are here. They do multiple runs every day. 10 or so per run.

The folks in the run can make or break it. More on that later, but I have some really good GPS tracks now...

We'll be camping right by the beginning of the trail up to Clear Lake. Beautiful area.

That place was packed when we went through it. Awesome spot tho, central to everything. I need to send you a GPS track of an off the beaten path road that has awesome scenery.

Please do so.

Second run on Friday was an off the radar trail across a pass well above tree line. Weather came in so not many pics, but this pass offered some of he best views I've seen up there. @Fireman this is the run I was referring to. Will get you those tracks.

lots of old mining establishments on these runs, and this one had a really intact one. Amazing how substantial some of these things were, conidering their location and elevation.

Headed back to camp about 5pm in the pouring rain. Typically Friday night is a really good potluck and raffle, but because of the rain the potluck was cancelled and the raffle was moved to Saturday.

I'd brought a gallon of gumbo and Ryan had a bunch of Boudin so we went ahead and cooked all that up, sharing with the folks immediately around us. Watching non southerners eat gumbo and boudin is pretty entertaining. No campfire because of the rain...turned in around 10p.

PS my CVT ground tent leaked. Bad. EDIT: the owner of CVT, Bobby, has offered to make it right, which is big of him and something you rarely see these days. More later.

Day three started around 9, and the organizers went ahead and did the raffle then instead of waiting, because rain was in the forecast (again). The two guys that put this on are top notch people. One of them writes for OutdoorX4 magazine...trying to get one or both of them to Crawl this year.

A local drove this 70 series in to hang out for a day or so. Was pretty cool. He imports these regularly.
