I have an article somewhere about a 60 thats done over a million km's on an unopened 2H, arguably the better motor available in this vehicle ;)

Sean

I friend of mine once had a look at a HJ60 and talked to the owner about it..
It had done 780 000 km's.(487500m)
He had used it as a work car , and he claimed that half the milage was done with a 2 ton trailer!
"well.. the clutch is a bit worn and it smokes a bit when i start it now!"
He had only replaced normal service parts like breaks, rubber-bits and other things that wears down.. he hed never opened the engine or tranny
So these cars can run "forever" if you change oil and treat your gearbox and axles with some care..

Mine just passed 370000km and shows few signs of weakness, even though i know previous owners put it to "good" use.

Ok guys, I finally pulled the head (452,458 miles) . . .

does that mean I have to reset my 'record hi miles clock' ? :-)

Only if you pull the short blocke and rebuild it

Well, you at least need an asterisk* !:flipoff2:

Seriously, though, you must have had a great maintenance program to get that far. What were your secrets?

What brand of oil
What frequency of changes
Valve adjustments
Significant repairs
Carb rebuilds

Also curious to know how may intake/exhaust manifold sets you have been through. They all seem to be bad by 200K or so.

I always try to rebuild an engine before it's needed. Valve job every 120K, rebuild every 250K or so. Though sometimes I'll build an engine just for fun. I'm on my 4th engine now.

what's the highest mileage anyone's ever gotten on their stock 2F, (i.e. head and block never been apart,) before any type of major engine overhaul was needed.

What about someone here coming up with some badges for 250K, 300K, 350K, etc.... like Mercedes does for their cars? I think some of the skilled craftsmen here or if you know anybody who does this type work could be a nice limited club to belong to.

217k

I'm at 217k stock with desmog, no burn-no leak. By the time I get to 300k, gas will probably be at $8/gallon. I only drive about 3000 miles/year.

I hope nothing goes wrong soon, cos I'm too poor to fix it..

i like that idea! unfortunately i'm neither skilled nor a craftsmen so i'm basically useless...

You're not gonna believe this, but here it is anyway:

Thank You....

> What were your secrets?
Regular, sort of, PM...
every year (Christmas present to truck) anti-freeze change, spark plugs,
tranny/xfer/diff lube change.
A lot of the miles are open road / Turnpike / Interstate

> What brand of oil
Castrol 20W-50 in the engine
Valvoline or Castrol 85-140 in tranny/xfer/diffs

> What frequency of changes
For the first 15 or so years, every 10K miles + filter
Past few years, swap about a gollon at 5K, complete+filter at 10K
Past year, full change +filter at 5K

> Valve adjustments
once, at about 300K, didn't need much...

> Significant repairs
ummm, Factory clutch & pressure plate died at 301K miles;
pressure plate 'spring fingers' wore off....
Knuckle bearings, wheel bearings....

Oh, I'm still on factory calipers, rotors & drums !
( drum cylinders have replacment pistons/seals)

rear drive line U-Joints a few months ago

Tie-rod ends a few years ago....

I'm not sure if any of the above is 'significant'....

In the plans (budget) H55, then I have the excuse to rebuild x-fer,
front output bearing is very noisey, drips lube - no pubbles, just slime...
The blow-back does serve, however, as underbody rust proofing :-)

> Carb rebuilds
Factory card, cleaned & 'rebuilt' once, about 3 months ago,
new secondaries diaphragm...

> Also curious to know how may intake/exhaust manifold
sets you have been through. They all seem to be bad by 200K or so.
My intake does have the notorius 'crack'; as long as gasket 'tween it
and ex mani is OK, crack is 'harmless'

Ready for this ?
Factory Intake & Ex manifold. Replaced gasket (double gasketed) about a year ago
Factory tranny & xfer too. Factory dizzy, but new advancer diaphragm 'thingy'
(expensive danged thingy ! )

However, I'm on my 3rd radiator, 5th or 6th alternator, 2nd P/S pump

Swapped the 3.7 diffs for 4.11's (both have ARB air lockers), lift via springs (MAF Safari) 35x12.50 (BFG ATs of course)...misc other doo-dads....

And od have rusticles here & there....a constant game of rust and mouse...

I am a little bit shy of these impressive records, but I am committed to reach them in my natural lifetime.

Current original mileage 36,300. BUT, I drive it a few times a week, in the summer only. I figure in 200-250 years I can catch up.

i have an 84 BJ60 (3b) with 428,000kms...uhh if my math is right that's around 266,600 miles. Valve sets, a water pump. geez there's some gassers that are kickin my but though!

I'm on my third odometer.

303k on a 1984 fj60 2fe. Rebuilt the head obviously because its fuel injected now. Block hasnt been touched but i have some gnarly crankshaft thrust play im worried about. all on irregular oil changes that are all pressed too far apart
