Got a problem I need help with. Got a knocking sound when I start and it hits 2000 rpm just knocks hard till it gets to 2500. Continues to knock mainly when I push the clutch in to shift. Sounds like it's comin from valves but not to sure. Any help?

The 4cyl Guru-King here would be WristPin, currently he's touring, but I am sure someone here can chime in or you could even try the terms "22" "re" in the 'Mudsearchbar and key term the search for just the 79-95 Toyota Truck Tech forum.

Take a stethoscope and try to isolate the noise, hell even a short piece of garden hose will work. Carefully with it running run the hose/stethscope across the valve cover, timing cover then crawl under and start running it across the oil pan. You may need a helper to increase decease the throttle to better help find the area of noise.

A long thin screwdriver works as well. And I'd listen to the pan, block, even the timing cover as noises can be deceptive. Resonating sounds can be a bitch.

If its a slaping sound, especially at start up, I would check the timing chain. If the sound varies with RPM then I bet it is a rod bearing.

Just to rule out everything, try adjusting your valves to see if that helps.

Knocks are not good and usually mean a bearing somewhere is toast.

Keep us posted.

I'll bet it's timing chain/guides.

I have yet to tear the top off and adjust valves, or check timing chain, I have not a clue on how to do em so I been waitin for this old dude to help me. My dad says it's a rod so I'm kinda half waitin for that to spin out and rebuild her. But it honestly sounds like it's comin from the 2nd row of valves ontop, If it was a rod wouldn't it be on the bottom of the motor? The knocking has only been occurring on startup and when I push in clutch to shift, seems to get better as it warms up.
