Any time it's below about 75, my '85 4Runner with the 22re does not want to start. I have had issues with leaking injectors in the past and that is all taken care of and this is different.

On first crank, it always starts up quick, just like when it's warm. However, when it's colder out, it only runs for 1-2 seconds and dies. Then, it refuses to start. Every time I crank it, it fires once or twice, then just cranks.

On a warm day, just a bump will start it. No matter what the temperature, once it runs, it runs great!

I'm going to pull the cold start injector and see what it is doing, but I don't know where to go from there and I recently moved and don't remember where my FSM is.

Yea the cold start injector and that whole system would be my first place I would look. I would first just unhook the the brown plug at the front of the intake and test the switch. There are check numbers on Roger Brown (4crawler's) site to test with a multi meter.

Then If that was not the issue I would make sure there is enough antifreez in the system with no air in there. That switch works off the tempature of the coolant and if there is an air bubble, it might make it start funny.

Have you taken off the cold start injector and placed it ino a jar and crank the motor to see if your getting gas?

My best is the switch though...

I plan on pulling the injector out over the weekend and checking it out. I've been putting it off, but I found a coolant leak on my other truck and I really need this one to be there for me while I diagnose the other. I'll post the results.

Thanks.

x2. Check the cold start time switch.

It may have something to do with me bypassing the stock ignition as well. I have a push button start. I turned the key earlier while pushing the start button and it started and stayed running. However, it wasn't THAT cold outside. I'll do some more testing over the weekend.

It looks like there are two temperature sensors under the thermostat housing, what does each one send a signal to? The one on the right looks to be in bad shape.

One is the cold start time switch. The other is the thermo-sensor for the efi (not the gauge).

You might check the IAT sensor in the VAFM. Or swap in a known good one. On my old 3vze I had the cold start injector disconnected because the delivery pipe cracked. The only thing that changed was how quickly it started and how well it idled when cold. When my VAFM took a dump it would do the start, run for a couple seconds and die routine.

The cold start injector only injects fuel when the key in in the START position... So it seems to me that if it starts up fine then dies, its not CSI related...

id check the AFM...and not sure what else lol sounds strange!
