This is the exact same noise I was getting from the power steering gearbox. The check valve in the valve body is rattling back and forth. It also affected oil pressure.

I thought it was a rod bearing but it wasn't.

How is the steering? Stiff?

If you get a stethescope, I bet you will find the noise the loudest on the output pipe from the ps pump.

Thanks for the advice. What did you do to fix it? Replaced the spring??? Havent really moved the steering as i havent driven bit i will check tomorrow.

If I have an engine apart I run OK std. oil in it initially so I can dump it after 1k miles or less once everything checks out. Did you do anything with the timing chain? The tensioner has a hook, is it released? See if you can see something down the front with the valve cover off. The timing chain should have been replaced if not already. 200k on the bottom end is possibly 1/2 life so don't feel too bad, plastigauge is a quick way to check bearing clearances.

I second the recommendation to remove all the belts, rotate by hand/wrench- listen with a stethoscope, rotate accesories. I can't remember but are there baffles that might be contacting the crankshaft? Then as suggested above, check out the oil when draining or drain into a light colored super-clean bucket, then drop the pan (s). I can't remember if the bottom pan lets you access much.

I would recommend removing the power steering box and turning it by itself before pulling the pan- I don't know about running it but I think it would be messy- but if brief and covered up would probably be fine

Great advice thanks Kief! Can you elaborate further on the timing chain tensioner. I dont remember seeing a hook on it. Didnt do anything with the timing chain just zip tied it to the sprocket when i had the timing cover and head off

Pull the power steering pump and turn by hand. Also, look at the PS pump gear. Have heard of tiny dings/imperfections causing quite a racket. I would try to cover up the hole where the PS pump mounts and run the motor, but you'd have to make that call.

Thanks guys for all the great advice. Thats why ilvmud!! For all the gurus that said it was the ps pump you nailed it. Removed it started the truck well i ll let you decide if it was the culprit

Removed power steering pump:

Now just need to see why the pump is making that noise

Thanks kief. Thats the thread i used. Taking it all apart again to see what happened

Took it apart put it back together. Put it back on the truck started it up noise is gone. Still a faint rattle lingering might be a loose pulley or something gonna remove the belts to troubleshoot

Well guys put the pump back on, and the noise is back. So I will be buying a new PS pump.. Sucks. Will update when the new PS pump comes in.. Thanks everyone for your help

Well, that's still about as well as this could have ended up, right? Glad it's nothing serious...

It's not the pump. It's the check valve inside the steering gearbox.

I say this because I have gone through two pumps already.

Granted the original pump needed replacing.

When you removed the pump you also took the steering box out of your diagnosis. Without pressure there is nothing bothering the gearbox valves.

When I installed the new pump and I would add resistance by turning the steering wheel the noise would go away. I opted to replace the PS gearbox as well and the noise is 90% gone. I will be changing the PS Pump gear as well. the noise that is left is a rattling noise , I probably didnt seat the gear correctly on the pump and i have some imperfections on the old gear itself, once I do this I hope the noise is completely gone and I have a quiet engine again.

What was the resolution? I am getting a rattling that happens above 2k rpm in neutral and I hear it above 3k when driving.

My hypercondriac self worries that it is something in the engine.

Possibly I need to operate the steering while reving he engine to the rpm that I get the noise. Did not hear the noise before replacing engine oil with the rotella 5w 40 synthetic. Also had the valve cover off, intake manifold and coiling system apart and rebuilt.

Thoughts and if it is the power steering gear will it fail eventually.
