Just out of curiosity: Did the 45 SWB ever come with a headache rack? I am assuming they never did, I have never seen one.

No accessories shown for the SWB in the microfiche John.

The LWBs got all the fun stuff!;p

Thanks Mark.

I figured they never came with them as I had never seen one. Seeing Dom's cargo rack on his SWB 45 got me thinking about headache racks. I'm wanting to use my SWB 45 to occasionally haul things and thought a headache rack or some other cargo rack of some sort would come in handy.

Problem is, I don't want to drill or weld anything onto the bed so it can be easily removeable and not screw up the bed. Don't want to offend the Cruiser gods.

John, I TOTALLY understand your point. Fortunately or unfortunately [as your perspective changes] that choice had already been made by the PO of my shortbed. There were holes in all four corners of the bed for some type of rack that had been and gone before I got the truck.

I had the choice before I had the truck painted to have them filled, but chose to leave them. An ironworks guy around the corner from my bodyshop made me four contoured plates that matched the holes and gave me a removable rack for the bed.

I only used it a few times before putting it in storage. If I had it to do over again, I would build it differently, but I would still build one.

It's a truck. Trucks are meant to haul things.;)

X 2 on needing to haul stuff....I go back and forth about reinstalling this rack. I can barely lift it off the ground, but filling the 16,1/2" holes wouldn't be fun and what the heck, it would probably save me in a rollover. The spare mount will be for displaying a 750 x 16 bias on a split rim, And no, I've never seen a factory headache rack on a swb.

Mark,
Do you have a picture of your SWB with the removable rack on it? Just curious to see what a SWB looks like with different racks.
Thanks in advance.

I think I'd like to go with some sort of rack on my SWB. I just want to make it look as clean as possible and be removeable if I don't need it or want the look of it all the time. I was also thinking of some sort of cage/rack that would allow me to run a canvas canopy. I've seen these on a few Aussie 45 LWB's and like the look of them. Wonder how it would look on a SWB?

Interesting.....definitely interesting. Not my cup of tea, personally but interesting. Too much green for me.

Gives me some ideas. Thanks for sharing.

HA! The very first SWB45 I ever saw belonged to a friend of a neighbor. Didn't even register [to me] what it was until I got into 4 wheeling back in 1980. And it had an olive drab canopy on a set of hoops. It would have looked wicked cool if the whole truck hadn't been painted pumpkin orange!

Anyhow, I've been thinking about the criteria you mentioned on your rack [no obvious holes], and I had this idea. Imagine a 3 panel HINGED rack, with the front of the bed obviously being the middle panel. All three panels could be made to whatever shape you wanted, with one proviso. The bottom of all three panels would be made out of a C channel placed on its side so that the rack could be simply PUSHED onto the inside of the front bedrail and then opened up with the two side panels also slotting into the bedrails. Not a single bolt involved at this point.

It would be your choice as to how to anchor the two side panels to keep them from folding in. If it were me, I would drill and weld a nut below the surface of the inside of the bedrail so that the rack channels could be bolted down inconspicuously. Might even use eye bolts to do it, to provide extra anchor points in the process.

Does my explanation make sense?

Thanks everyone for the pics. Keep em coming if you find more.
Those woodies are pretty cool.

a.greenspan - what are you, some sort of photograph archivist? You and soenke post the most interesting pictures on MUD. One of the reasons I like to travel is to see the vehicles that are unique to different contries. Europe has a wealth of interesting vintage vehicles.
