Has anyone removed/modified the speaker pods in the doors for better sound?

Hi all. I'm in the process of completely upgrading the infotainment system in my 2005 Lexus LX 470. Mine is not Mark Levinson, rather the Factory Premium audio system using a Pioneer amp with 7 speakers including the subwoofer. I've added a Teyes CC3 2K head unit and pretty much have that tamed. I've also installed a new AHD rear camera. I'm adding a DB Drive Neo5V2 amp (4x 125W and 500W sub channel). I'm pairing this with Focal PS 165 FSE front 2x component speakers and Kicker KSC 650 rears. Plus I've got an external Alpine SS-SB10 subwoofer. I'm not planning to reuse the stock factory subwoofer speaker or enclosure.

I'm planning to remove, or perhaps cut the back out of, the factory speaker pods in the doors, and use the whole door as an infinite baffle speaker box. Has anyone tried this? Did you get much better sound? I'm a bit worried about the potential speaker damage by water ingress. Thoughts?

My ML pods are just mounts, completely open on the back side. I don't see any issues with doing this, it's how the vast majority of the cars I've ever disassembled are configured.

Check to see if they are actually sealed or ported, or if they just serve as mounts.

I also always seek out cones that are not made from paper.

I simply attached heavy duty plastic sheeting around the speakers. Attached on the inside, through the speaker hole, so the whole backside of the speaker was protected. Simple, cheap, works fine. For true high fidelity, perhaps there are better solutions. Did this on my '03 Landcruiser a few years ago, and other vehicles in the past. Perhaps also cutting heavy duty rubber lining that's used for shower installs, under the tiles. Also, if heard of people using boat/marine rated speakers .

Thanks guys. I'm almost up to this step. Just thinking ahead. I've also read that you can seal off the holes in the interior door panel with ABS plastic sheets to provide an enclosed speaker space and reduce panel vibrations. I'll also be using sound deadening in the doors.
