Has anyone ever tried to widen the OEM wheels with new shells?

@Racer65 sells 16" rims that are built with centres from 16" split rims welded into 16" shells.

@pbgbottle had stock shells widened.

Rick,

Where did you have those done? I can’t remember the name but I thought it was near you.

Thanks

With your mad fab skilz, you HAVE to try to do at least one yourself. @Texican told me he did a set for himself with nothing but a bubble balancer. Of course those Texans can exaggerate sometimes, but I don't think this was one of them.

It's not rocket science.

I'm not sure what you mean by, 'Bubble Balancer'... is that a term for a half full bottle of whiskey. Do you lay it down on its side and watch the bubble move back and forth till it's in the middle. ;)

I did a wheel alignment with a whisky stick, a square, and a tape measure on an E350 Ford van to dive it to the alignment shop. The passenger side was bang on. I couldn't get the drivers side where I wanted it. The shop had quoted me $70 for the front wheel alignment. They called me and said it needed a bushing that would be $35. I wasn't surprised... the surprise came when I arrived to pick it up & they wanted an additional $170 to install it. I asked them why the extra cost. They said installing the bushing wasn't part of an alignment. I told them they should have explained there would be an upcharge if it needed more than a toe in adjustment. I could have told them it would likely need a bushing since it had lift coils and new ball joints. Apparently telling them where I'd left the spare bushings wasn't enough. They asked me why I'd not told them it needed a bushing. I explained I could do a lot with a level and a square, but that's kinda pushing it. To top it off, they didn't put the correct one.

That damn hippy been smoking too much again.....bubble balancer???
..the jig pictured in the thread was copied from somebody that made wider wheels. I’ve done 10 wheels, 5 10” and 5 8” time consuming, but not hard.

Nice job Texican, I may try to tackle this myself. Unfortunately my donor rims are the non-rivet type. I should probably wait until I see a set of riveted ones pop up in the classifieds.
Looks like a fun project. If the Bart shells are a close fit, it would make this job relatively easy.

Thanks for the info!
