I passed this test this eveneing. Sugguest you buy the study guide as noted above. Also sugguest you take the practice tests on eham.net and print them off and use them to study for as those are some of the real test questions you will see on the actual test. The 35 multiple choice test covers the entire range of the study guide material. I thought a couple of the questions got down into the fine print and I had to guess at 3 or 4. But if you read the study guide a couple of times near the test session and review a number of the practice test questions I think you'll do fine. Make sure to review as many of the practice test questions in the guide and online as you can because the breadth of the material is pretty broad and while the material is not hard...its just remembering what was defined or expressed. Test questions are random generated from a large pool.

Good for you. I have not had time to continue studying. I started reading the online guide but have slacked.

But I have half doors on the 40 just in time for winter.

What antenna are you useing and where did you get it?

I bought two antennas....one is listed on that invoice I emailed to you in the past...but its fairly tall (3 foot or so) and so I went back to Gigaparts in Huntsville, AL and got a Comet brand SBB2NMO antenna. The NMO is the style of the mount, so you have to get a NMO mount to go with it if you don't have that... the mount will come with some 6 feet of wire/coax to connect to the radio or if thats not long enough you'll need an extension cable. I should say the mount I bought came with the coax built in to the mount...I'm not sure that all the mounts are made this way as I'm totally "green" in the ham world.

Gigaparts has a online web store too.

I've only turned the radio on and I've listend in on a few ham transmissions...but I've not done any testing as of yet regarding transmitting.

THe big priority was to get a smaller antenna so that the trees don't eat it for lunch.

and I think this is the mount I have

Yaesu FT-2900R Product Reviews

Guys... here is a link to the reivews associated with the radio I purchased. You can navigate to the review area of the web site and then over in the right hand column area you can search for the specific model you may be intereted in.

Just like most any review place you'll see people who hate this or that and then people who seem to think whatever product is great. Just wanted to post this up ....eham.net for a source of reivew material. Looks like most of the guys doing the reivews are experienced folks so there should be some good info in the mix.

So there you go.

Got my antenna installed and have been listening to NOAA weather radio. That in its self is not worth the 250$ I've got in this but it's pretty cool. Can't wait to try them out this weekend.

Sent from my iPhone using IH8MUD

Nice radio gear harness. Would be nice for using a ht radio if you are guiding folks over obstacles and stuff.

Testing April 18th at 6pm central in jasper if anyone wants to give it a try or upgrade their license

Ok...got tired of the "brush/limb monster" eating my antennas. I'll save my nice diamond tall antennas for when or if I ever go out west. So I'm going to try a short spring loaded antenna made my larsen.. (its a dual band but that's not an issue... NM02/70SH) 2m and 440.... about 19inches tall with NMO mount and spring base at the bottom of the antenna... Looks to be made well and should stand up to the limbs and brush a little bit better. ITs stainless so it should tolerate the weather rather well.

Also I bought a mount from this guy (breedlove mounts https://breedlovemounts.com/)...he makes some heavy duty stuff. For this antenna its NMO mount....I've just got to see if my right angle bracket will still work for the mount to lock down on.

Just FYI for those looking for a more survival antenna.... of course the antenna can only take so many direct hits....but the spring loaded base is a great feature for the trails in TN and surrounding areas where we have to deal with a lot of limbs and brush.

gonna swap antennas this weekend unless I break something and then screw around with the radio I have...to make sure its workign right. For some reason I was having problems at GSMTR.... not sure what the deal is. I would have to say I'm not a fan of the yaseu mic...its seems to me to be a cheap made thing. WE will see how it plays... if its the radio I may jump over to an ICOM like Roger and a few others have.

http://www.gigaparts.com/Product-Lines/2M-Radios_2/Icom-IC-V8000.html

I like simple and easy to use....so the ICOM might be the next step if my radio is crap..

I know....every now and then Roger will get something right the first time :)

That's a good price on the radio.
I got it right because I listened to the Ak guys that have been runnin 2 meters for years.

I gotta rule out the dumb factor "me" then see what I can tell. I recall Andy having some issue with his mic. But my problem seemed to be that I could transmit but could not hear replies at times...even in line of sight, while others could. Which sounds like maybe an antenna issue or maybe some setting is screwed up on the radio...I don't like where I have the radio mounted but for now its just going to have to sit tight.
