Had new key made

My local Toyota dealer cut 3 keys from VIN for me for FREE. Sometimes it is good to check with dealer.

I've had no issue getting the dealer to cut these keys by VIN as long as it has the "Denso" marking. The cost has ranged from $0-10 depending on who's behind the counter. I've had fewer issues with the "cut by vin" than the "duplicated" keys.

The crazy flip key that my son had to have is a whole different story.

I just had 2 (without internals) cut this weekend, because my son figured out, after a few months, that the "flip key" sucks.

Hell yeah!! I bought an eBay key a few months ago. I couldn't get the LC into program mode because of the bad actuators. Replaced the actuators and still couldn't get it in program mode. Just followed the YouTube video on the OP. Bam! Worked the first time! Now I need to go get my new key fob cut. Thanks!!

Well, Ace hardware wouldn't cut my key. They said since it doesn't have a chip in it, if I were to try to start my LC it would immobilize it. True?

It's a transponder key I bought on eBay.

A cut unchipped or unprogrammed key will crank the engine but not start it.

My experience with an unchipped or unprogrammed key, in a 2000 LC or 2006 LX, is that there is no "lockout" like the old GM VATS system. If you use a chipped/programmed key right after an unchipped or unprogrammed key, it works just fine.

I'd say the Ace hardware guy is full of s***...

@CruiserPek

I have had an Ace cut me a bare metal (no chip) key. And I attempted to use that key to start the truck with the Master Key from Toyota on the same ring. Sometimes it would start other times just crank. No lockout. Was able to fire the truck up right after using a chip Key.

As stated above try the local dealer.

Or take the Ace guys some of these:

You should go in and see if they have any blank metal Toyota keys hanging on their rack and get them to cut one for your truck. If they cut it, then pull out your blank key and get them to cut it. I've got 4 metal keys cut to fit my truck.

As others have said, the truck will crank, but won't start.

If it's a transponder key then it does have the "chip" in it since it is actually a transponder chip. So I'm not sure why they wouldn't cut it. I would suggest a local lock smith like I did. I know jLB has been harping on going to the dealer but for me it wasn't convenient since it is about an hour away vs 5 minutes to the lock smith.

I have this. She put it in a machine that test for chips. It said no chip.

Strange, it looks identical to my key. Did she happen to test the master key on the device? Also, did you get it from the same seller that I bought mine from?

Yep, the master key showed a chip. So she says, I couldn't see the machine.

I can't remember who I bought it from. I tried to find it on my purchase history on eBay but couldn't.

This is Probably a dumb question, but: What makes a key a "valet" and "master"? I have two working transmitter keys, both open the glove box. Are they BOTH master keys?

I believe the valet keys are a plain gray key normally (from reading, mine did not come with one) vs the master keys that have the key fob built in typically, although it doesn't have to have the fob. The valet key is designed so that if you were to have the car valeted the valet (or whoever) can still start and drive the vehicle but would not be able to get into the glove box with the key. So it sounds like they are both master keys. To be a master key it just needs to be programmed with the transponder to the ECU with at least 1 master key, you can program up to 5 master keys and 3 valet keys.

Possibly, but I wouldn't use the 'opening' of the glove box alone as an identifying mark.

Instead, note the status of your blinking security light when you insert the key into the ignition.

IF the light goes off immediately with both keys, then both are recognized as Master Keys.

IF one of them is inserted and the light goes off after a few seconds (2-3) then that key is a Valet Key.

Thanks, Guys! It would appear that I have two master keys.. the security light goes out immediately after inserting the keys. Will pick up a new one for a spare and program as directed.

Thanks!

Bobr1: when I bought my key, which I believe I purchased from the same vendor as you, the store I went to put it in their machine and it said it did not have a chip. I then asked them to cut it, which they did. I brought it home and went through the procedure and it works just fine. there is a chip in there although I don't know why their machine does not recognize it.

I also bought the 29.50 key off internet. Locksmith charged me $40 to cut it!!!!! I did it anyway and tried multiple times to program the transponder. Watched the video in the first post and voila'...it worked like a charm $69.50 invested and I have a new key with working fob. Thanks so much. Will likely buy one more and find someone cheaper to cut it!

FWIW, the local Lowes cut mine for free...
