i have been reading the info here but when i go to get bearings other stuff and that for a 80 series landcruiser with a h151 tranny they keep asking the early or the late 80 series which i do not beleive is a case of h151(early) and a r151(late) or vice versa but i wonder after reading wiki it mentions a h152 also so could this be a late h151 just some advice please

Hello,

The 80 Series came with these manual transmissions:
  1. 1FZ/1HD engines: H150F/H151F. Early 80 Series models used the H150, later models used the H151.
  2. 1HZ engine: R151F.
The H152 is a newcomer, and is fitted to 2017 70 Series Land Cruisers, so far for the Australian market only.

Is yours a gasser?

You're certain of this, being an H150F mated to a 1HZ is, in fact, 21 splined?

At least for me ( what I see ) 100% positive ..

Keep in mind that I did use an H150 from a HZJ70 ( 99 ) for my tranny swap .. ( Marilu )

folks, h150's and h151's are essentially the same transmission.

most current production are h150's which is based only the ratios of gears, nothing more.

80 series- which are dinosaurs -had a 1hz version which was 21 spline using a 275mm clutch disk. all others are 300mm

I have not touched a vdj or grj transmission but they appear to be 14 spline as are all hdt/hdft/hdfte/1fz transmissions.

the first two years had problematic synchros- these can be identified by NOT having the three bosses on the right side of the case near the bellhousing.

There is an adaption that moves the shift lever back on 100 series with bucket seats (I have this system for sale in diesel parts) otherwise the shifter is forward on all other models

They ONLY accept the big case transfer case (ala 80 series in the states). Part time t cases come in two forms, 80 series with motor to drive the front axle rod (one for sale in florida in parts section) and the standard fare 70 series which has a pivoting "bowtie" to operate the rods for high low and front axle. These are very rare in the US but common overseas.

No one has made an adapter for std 38mm cases seen on h55's and r15x transmissions.

note, the viscous clutch transfer case is not shown in any images above

Ok chaps, how do you think the h151 will go behind a tame 6bt with an old nanna at the wheel?

true, a manual is more reliable than the auto.
as for shifting i have found the opposite to be true. i have no problem powershifting the H55F. now the R151/141 are harder to power through. the H151 is not smooth (in my hands) and i have not driven new ones but the ones i have driven are below 100K. if i had a CHOICE, i would go with the H55F.

Just making a post here due to a discrepancy...in case anyone finds these links researching transmissions as I did. First gear listed here for the H151 is actually the ratio for the H150 according to link below provided by @roscoFJ73 in 2009:

FYI, I’m researching 5 speed conversion for my LX450 and was originally trying to figure out making it happen with the H55F, which I’ve loved in 60/62 conversions. For 1FZ, appears that custom bell housing and shifter console would be required to accommodate H55. H151 is most natural conversion for a FZJ80 series, although 1st gear not quite as low as H55...

H55 custom bell housing is now available.

I know and that’s what I was thinking. However, my impression from an educated source was that FJCO was making those mainly for 1FZ’s they did in the 40 builds. And to do so for an 80 would require additional modification because the shifter locations wouldn’t match up (among other things). The H151 seemed a path of least resistance. But I haven’t talked to FJCO about it. And I haven’t ever driven an H151. The ones I’d have an opportunity for would be 1HDT’s, not FZ’s. Your expert opinion would be appreciated?

I wouldn't go to the effort of a h55f. The 5th gear in them isn't on the main shift IIRC, making it weaker. Either that of the gears don't mesh by much. This can be helped by the aftermarket but there is a reason that Mr Toyota fitted the h1** series gearboxes to anything of higher horsepower.
