We used to go to Huntington Lake every year to race Hobie Cats and would sometimes go and check out the China man's cabin. The miner that China Peak is named after. The history (story) to why it's called China Peak is here: China Peak, A Sierra Mountain Named in Honor of A Chinese Cowboy - https://chineseamericanhistorian.blogspot.com/2020/08/china-peak-sierra-mountain-named-in.html
Once you locate his cabin on a map and get the GPS, you can find trails to get there. Not difficult, but great country and then topping it off to see something waaaay off the beaten path when you find his cabin. The cabin is a hewn log cabin and in pretty bad shape, but it should be there. We was there about 5 years ago.
It's not something many people know about so it's not visited often which part of what makes it so cool.
Enjoy!
That sounds just about perfect. I used to do solo backpacking trips every year, starting from Lake Thomas Edison on the other side of Kaiser Pass, so I know the area pretty well.

The creek fire did some serious damage up there in 2020 and I haven't been back since, but I'll have to check out your spot on the fire maps. This is a depressing but informative site showing historical fire boundaries.

Thanks for the tip.

If you know the area, then you all may want to stop at Mono Hot Springs and warm up in a mossy slimy natural hot tub!
Since these Hobie Cat races (Fresno Hobie Cat Fleet sponsored) were the 2nd week in August, we've actually had snow ball fights going over Kaiser Pass that time of year when there was heavy snow that season! We usually like going to Ward Lake to jump off the 10 - 15 foot high rocks into the water or do a little fishing.

This was taken at the top of Kaiser Pass the third week in June, sometime around 2005. It gets pretty deep up there, that's for sure. I'm not terribly surprised by a July open, just disappointed.

Not sure if this counts as a "picture of my 460" but I built a storage shelf / sleeping platform yesterday in preparation for a trip i'm taking in early July. I am a degenerate POS and so it is not pretty, but it's very sturdy and gets the job done all for about 30 bucks worth of lumber and my old Lexus floor mat :)

I had previously removed the 3rd row, so there was plenty of room for it.

It can also be removed VERY easily if i need the trunk space since it is not bolted down in any way. If I find that I like it a lot, I'll figure out a good way to bolt it down.

May not be pretty, but if it works for you and gives a little more storage space? Who cares??
Good on ya for just doing it!!

Thank ya sir! My thoughts exactly.

I only car camp a few nights a year, so didn't want to invest too much into this.

Nice time camping in Allegheny this weekend.

How do you like your iKamper? We love ours!
Is that the new short iKamper? How is it with a family in it?
Been thinking of trading our original iKamper for one of the short ones since it's just my wife and I and maybe on rare occasions our 5 year old granddaughter.
I'd appreciate the lighter load on top, full use of my satellite antenna and even my sunroof again!

Looks like fun. Where in Ohio are you f

Love it for my son and I. It’s a little snug with three people but it can handle it if you don’t mind being close. Yes it’s the mini

Chopped the front bumper. Going to do the rear later this week. Do you guys who have done this weather proof the wiring in any way? Lots of little connections and some wires behind these bumpers (Front and Rear) that were previously better protected by all the plastic... makes me a little nervous on a vehicle with so many electronics. I've run tube bumpers and things like that in the past, but the vehicles were far less complicated.

My Victory aftermarket front bumper exposes a ton. I didn't do anything other than a washer bottle skid. But do take plenty of pictures and measurements when you cut the rear!

That makes me feel better. Thanks! And will do - plan on knocking it out this week and will get some good photos.

As long as you don't submerge much above the top of your bumper and do it slowly, you should be fine. Most all the important wiring is mounted higher in the engine bay. You may be able to go deeper, but personally, I wouldn't try it. Also, don't EVER shut off your engine when submerged, or at least don't EVER start your engine if it stalled or was turned off while underwater either.
Any wiring like driving lights, washer bottle, horn, etc. are fine if they get submerged going through a crossing.

Makes sense - thanks for the info! Part of my concern is me kicking up a bunch of salt and brine (rust belt) all winter and corroding those connections, but I do think it should be too bad.

It may not be a bad idea to just rinse the bottom of your rig after a drive like that. Maybe pressure wash it or a simple sprinkler/s setup that you can drive over so they're positioned under your car (one each in front, middle and rear) and then just turn on the sprinklers, go inside and have a cuppa coffee for 10 or 15 minutes and that should rinse the entire bottom of your car!
