EDIT #2: New plan starts at post #54.

EDIT: Word from Gulches is that they're not opening this weekend due to flooding. Let's go somewhere else. I'd wager all the SC folks are now out but I'd hate to waste a planned weekend off. Richland Road is an obvious possibility. Skip to post #40 for the chatter since the closure update.

Starting a new thread here so that I can do the standard "post #1 updates" for this trip as needed. See post #2 for more info.

First and foremost, Gulches is a fun place just over 2 hours from CLT in Waterloo, SC (SE of Greenville, near Laurens). There are literally trails for every type of vehicle, though most trails are short; some are only a few hundred yards. The park is set up with a main loop running through the center of it from which the other trails branch off. You'll love this place if you like hills and nice scenery. You'll hate this place if it rains. Seriously. Every bit of ground that isn't exposed rock or bottomless water pit is red clay, and most of it is in the shade. This is why the trip is weather dependent. The park won't even open, over the cold months, if it has rained within 2 days (as told by the owner last year). The exit trail out of the main system and campsites doesn't have many winching anchors. He will tractor you out for a $FEE, if he can.

Winches are good to have here because most trails don't have sections long and straight enough for one truck to strap another. We didn't need one last year, though.

There are just under 10 campsites that follow a river and most are very close to it. One or two sites can hold maybe 2 tents and trucks. Another one or two can fit 2-3 times that amount, if my memory is correct. There is a deep cut in, dry, sandy riverbed that separates most sites from the trails. I was told that it can fill with water and strand you if it rains hard, not that you'd make it up the wet, clay hill trail out anyway.

The park office headquarters building has a back section with a basic indoor bathroom (with shower) and a small kitchenette room - think break room at work - with a microwave and sink. Maybe a coffee pot? It's far enough from the campsites that you won't want to walk there.

Saturdays are the big day for the buggies and the crackpots who drive them. There are plenty of insane trails for those guys and lots of area to park and watch the action. There is ample trailer parking near the office as well as a single air compressor at no charge.

I think we should plan on a Saturday (27th) arrival. Let's camp that night along the river if weather permits or just return home. I'd like for some of the RDU folks to see this place but the distance really demands an overnight to make the most of the park.

FEES: Please see here for a schedule of fees. Note the Weekend Pass option that might appeal to some of you.

This trip is open to anyone that is interested. I'll spread the word to the South Carolina clubs, also.

Lastly, Stan (NCFJ) and Heather have once again offered up their place in Chesnee (minutes off I85) as a staging point. The park is less than 1 hour from there.

Last years trip thread. Start at post #75 for pics.

We are about 45 minutes from the Gulches, anyone going is welcome to use our place as a staging point if coming from a distance.

They have a couple of bunk houses, also, heated, but not well insulated, just fyi

James, that's 3.5 two week cycles from this past Sat :)

Yeah - seeing as it's now going to a new tuner who laughed at the 2 week estimate that the other guy gave, that's why I"m a maybe :)

Sounds like this guy is at least being straight up with you. Cut him a break, nobody likes trying to figure out and fix another shop's work

Believe me - I've been nothing but nice to not only him, but the guy that dicked me around for a few months. I don't have it in me to get mad and yell at someone that's just trying the best they can.

That said, I have a good friend that is an automotive journalist - he's planning on writing an article when the truck is done. The title of which will likely be "Two Weeks for a Turbo Install".... or something similar. I'll link it when it's up.

We all have projects that go this route. Every time you think you are on a roll something just slows the roll. Sounds about right for a title. I've had no desire to play with turbos or super chargers myself, I am content for now putting V8s in LCs. Never know I might just cam one up some day and play a little with it's tune :)

I'm an even more maybe. Infinity 6 Ecu is on its way.
