My thread was deleted ... but I just wanted to mention that the Kenwood DNX9140 fit the bill.

It is a Garmin based NAV and it allows the use of TOPO Maps.

From what I can tell, it will allow you to use either Nat Geo or Garmin TOPO Maps.

Also, it has a "Breadcrumb" or "Plotting" feature they call "Tracklog" which allows you to record and store up to 4 trails. This is useful for me when I venture off road. I can record my trail on the way in ... so I can find my out after.

Just thought some folks might like to have this sort of info.

Best,

Rich

$1,799 if you purchase from an authorized dealer....less from a non-authorized dealer.

Also, if you add MSN Direct, Sirius, Ipod adapter, and a few other things ... it adds about $300 to that price.

Bringing up an older thread.

Filmpros, do you still like the unit? Also could you post a picture of the Topo screen?

I have a Nuvi that I have loaded Topo onto, but I don't like the fact that you can't change the information displayed. I was just curious as to whether while you are in topo mode, if you can choose what information you want to see, such as elevation, things like that?

Anyone else that has one, feel free to chime in.

Thanks,

Jack

I just ordered the Kenwood DDX514 and the KNA-G510 add on NAV unit. I hope it will do the same. I'll post up when I get it installed. This combo is much more affordable than the DNX9140 but I would not call it cheap.

I am getting ready to buy a Kenwood NAV unit for its SD card Topo map capability but it appears that Kenwood doesn't have the 9140 listed on their site anymore.

Kenwood - Navigation

Th3 9140 appears to have replaced with DNX9960. This corrects many of the bugs/glitches with the 9140 and adds TONS of features!

Apparently the DNX9960 isn't even released yet though. It was expected to be released in April according to the following link. Kenwood DNX9960 - DIYMA.com
but there is acomment eluding to a May release.

It's pricey at $1899 MSRP but it includes built-in; DVD, Parrot Bluetooth, SIRIUS interface (just plug in their special cable to your SCC1 univeral antenna control box), Lifetime NAVTEC Traffic service, Advanced Voice Recognition for NAV and all connected sources, Lane assist for back and front cameras. Back-up views of close, wide, down (for trailer hitch) & 180 degrees left and right on a split screen. Complete integration for all the new iPod Touches/iPhones. You can even get text messages on the unit, straight from your phone.

With everything included in the unit, it saves from having to mount various units under dash, seats, console, etc... and running wires all through the cab. I like this as there is not alot of places to stuff like bluetooth, SAT radio interfaces & antenna control boxes, not to mention the heat that those units build up being stuffed in various spots.

Anyway, if you are comtemplating a new NAV unit. You'd probablly do well to just wait a couple of months for this one. I am.
