im relatively new to the toyota mini truck scene (i've owned about 10 fj40's)
Im getting sick of driving my powerstroke everyday with the diesel prices around here so i've been looking for an 80's xtra cab toyota just to get around in.

I knew my friend had an 88' he just rescently stopped driving daily and it hasnt moved in a few weeks, so i asked him about it and he said he'd take $1000 for it. it has a 4 inch lift, 2 inch body lift, 35 inch bfg m/t's, 22RE, 5 spd, fiberglass step side bed, no rust on the frame but alittle on the right side of the cab on the rocker (comes with a new rocker), it has a new centerforce clutch and the truck actually drives very nicely, has 169,000 on the body and 50,000 on the engine.

im going to his house tonight with cash because i think im stealing it from him for $1000 but i'd like some opinions from people that know more about the mini trucks

(and yes, if i buy it will get a solid axle)

That's a terrible deal..... what was your friends number? :D Assuming it's bee regeared for the 35's it will probably make a decent DD. What kind of mileage were you getting in the powerstroke?

Cause with that set up you'll be looking at around 17-20 I'd guess... That's some big meats and a bit on the tall side...

its got stock gears for some reason...i think some 5:13's should make it purty good with a lockrite of course. IM picking it up today so ill post some pics later

okay guys well the rig is at my house now.

i know i ahvnt taken any pictures yet, im just waiting to get my camera back.

I was just wondering, what size are my axles? 7.5 or 8 inch? so i can buy some 5.29's and a lockrite later this week.

Also for some reason the truck will Idle great, but when it warms up and i go to drive it up the road it pops and sputters at around 3k, if i keep on it it will slowly rev up but it doesnt like it, then when i put the clutch in it revs free?

im going to scan it later but i figured i'd ask you guys first.

Sounds like a clogged fuel filter maybe...

Front axle is the 7.5, the rear is an 8 inch, and make sure they know it's a 4 cylinder.

i thought about the fuel filter but i should also say the check engine light comes on when this happens.

I've got an IFS 4.56 pumpkin sitting in the shop that I'd love to part with....

Not the 5.29s you're looking for, but it's something.... Only ~43,000 miles on it, and the case is tapped for a temp sensor (yeah, it's a leftover from the Surf), if you are into that sort of thing.

Nice find. I've pretty much convinced everyone at work that they need to buy a Toyota (either pickup or 4-Runner, none of them are cool enough for a cruiser--yet), and they've been looking. $1000 for that is beyond a steal, that was a mugging. :)

I'm thinking fuel filter too. Don't remember with my 22R-E, but on the 2LT-E, the check engine light comes on when intake fuel pressure drops due to fuel filter clogging. Both EFI systems were designed around the same time...

thats a good deal.

depends on your location the prices of these trucks vary.

in my area a stocker in great shape can pull $3500

i just bought a 1st gen 89 4Runner for 800 bucks. ;p

I paid $3500 for my '85 mini back in April or May. Real good shape. I didn't "steal" it, but I feel it was worth the $$$. They're great little trucks. I'm in the SF Bay area.
