I have an 80 series, but I also change oil on a few other vehicles. I got a filter socket that was deep where the 3/8" square drive fits because it seems like every filter socket is too shallow and pushes out. But now I wanna get a set of filter sockets that won't push out the 3/8". You guys must know what I'm talking about with the 80. Gotta be metal. Does anyone have a recommendation on a kit they found works well?

These work great I don’t know about a set I have just bought each individual for my different rigs.

Thank you for this! I broke the cheep chinee filter wrench I found because the 4× spot welds were weak. This looks like a quality replacement.

is this the correct size for the FZJ80?

Depends on which filter you're using. For example, a Mobil 1 M1-301A filter (the larger filter that fits) may have been changed (design) slightly in the last year or so ago, so now an M1-301A is 15 flutes and takes a 93mm wrench. I don't have a Toyota filter handy to check it's size or number of flutes.

I've found it helps greatly to use an extension bar that has a locking mechanism (ie: a slider that locks the extension to the socket or in this case the filter wrench) so it won't come loose from the wrench. But also it's a loose fit in the hole so it's like a wobble extension, lets you get at the filter further off-axis but stays together.

Then use a flex head 3/8" long ratchet (14-20") which gives you more leverage but also it gets your hands out of the away from the other components.

For the M1-301A I use an AmPro 93mm with 15 flutes (I have the same filter wrench from other manufacturers, same size, all fit the M1-301A)
Extension is a Craftsman 6", 3/8" drive Quick Release locking extension bar (there are other manufacturers who make the same thing)
Flex head ratchet; lots of choices (check Harbor Freight), go for something at least 14", 20" gives you more leverage, makes it easier/quicker.
Here's a set of Craftsman locking extension bars from Lowes (They're not made in the USA anymore, if you want that look on Fleabay for old stock, or wait for the Tariffs to force them to be made in the USA again ;) )

First thing to do is decide which filter you're planning to install (Toyota, Mobil 1 or ??) then take it to an auto parts store and test fit a few oil filter cap-type wrenches until you find the one that fits best. IME Advance Auto in the US carries at least half a dozen different sizes on display. I've found that filter wrenches that say they have the same dimensions are not all manufactured exactly the same so better IMHO to test fit the filter wrench to your filter size/brand. Then pick up a set of locking extension bars and long flex-head ratchet and you're good to go.

I do up my filters hand tight, and given I change my oil every 5,000kms, they are never hard to remove by hand. I've never needed to use a filter wrench on my own vehicles, unless a mechanic or PO has been there before me.

IME depends on the filter size, hand size, whether the vehicle is on a lift (reaching up or reaching down). If the filter is squeaky clean and I'm grabbing the filter from below IME it's often easy to remove by hand, smaller filter even easier, but if it's the larger filter and it's hot and I'm working from above, that's when the filter wrench comes in handy (unless you do that for living and you've already burned your hands so many times you don't feel the pain anymore).

I appreciate the info on removing filters, fellas, but I'm asking if anyone knows a good set of filter caps!

@fatrap :

"it seems like every filter socket is too shallow and pushes out"

Use a locking extension bar and a cap type filter wrench that fits snugly. One option is to shop around with the filter you plan on using
in hand and test fit it at the store before you buy the wrench.

Never bought a complete set, just individual filter wrenches for the filters I was installing.

FWIW and IME Lisle makes good tools so here's a large set that goes up to the 93mm-15 flute size ( and larger, some sets don't include wrenches that large) and the 73mm-14 flute size for the YZZD3 Toyota oil filter.

Good price for the Lisle set at Summit Racing:

I used a similar small strap wrench yesterday to unscrew my oil catch can so I could dump it out. This time I greased the threads so it won't get stuck. FWIW

This is the professional tool that i use for the smaller Toyota oil filters it's made by AST, This company also makes larger sizes for bigger filters too

Op could check Fleabay for used or NOS Toyota oil filter wrenches:

I have tried a number of various filter wrenches, years ago I gave up and went to this:

I keep one in the portable tool kit and one on the shelf with the filters.
Why buy multiple different wrenches when you can get one?

The red handled ones in the second pic are the ones that I use. I basically threw all my other oil filter wrenches away after I got this one. The three position pivot joint will adjust to almost any size oil filter, and gives enough leverage to remove even tough jobs. I have had it so long that I can’t remember where I got it. But it’s nice to see at least one other person using one… ;) also, I only tighten my filters by hand, so I rarely have to use it.
