Loss of engine or electrical power?

when the glow plug light comes on the engine feels sluggish but it comes and goes

Seeing it is a compression ignition engine,I cant see why the power consumption from the glowplugs would affect engine power.(unless the plug heat was affecting the fuel burn somehow?)
The only other electrical item that could affect the engine is the 12 volt power to the fuel pump solenoid, but that would stop the engine dead.

At what speed or rpms does this happen?
Have you tried disconnecting the wire on the busbar ?That would totally isolate the glowplugs from their power supply.
If you try that ,tape the bare end of the wire so it cant short out on anything.

I dont think disconnecting the light will disconnect the power to the plugs.

It comes on whenever it feels like it haha and yeah that's what I meant I disconnected the wire to the rail pulled the fuse and still does it. On the egr i'm pretty sure it has one of those egr blocking plates would that effect it????

If the glow plug system has been fully disconnected, then you would have to rule that out.
Realistically, the only things that stops these is a lack of fuel.
Either the pump losing pressure or you have fuel starvation.

The only other thing I can think of is that you have some kind of short which is playing havoc with the fuel cut solenoid

Would you like to expand on that?

If your egr valve doesnt work the glow plug licht goes on and off, its a mallfunctioncode..
Dont have the answer to work around it...

Do you know for sure if the australian models actually had the valve? Toyodiy seems to be saying its not applicable on ARL models and I dont recall ever seeing one on a HZJ79 (or on a 78 or 105 series).
Until 06 or 07 ,I think these models were more or less exempt from emissions

I don't understand why it would be the fuel pump if it's only when the glowplug light cones on, ah well auto sparky job haha

Because once a diesel is running it needs only fuel and air to keep it running(Im talking about non computerised diesels like the 1HZ).
Once the battery, starter motor and glowplugs have got the engine running they become totally divorced from it.
From then on its only air or fuel starvation that can slow or stop a diesel.

With one exception, that if you disconnect the power to the fuel cut solenoid,it will stop the fuel supply to the pump.

Your glow plug light may be coming on because of some electrical fault that is also causing the solenoid to cut the fuel.

Similar Issue Glo Plug Light intermittant

I have a similar issue, the glo plug(pre heater) light illuminates on the dash whenever it wants to. I confirmed that it is giving voltage to the glo plugs whenever the light is on. If I just click off the ignition when I'm driving the light will go off and stay off, until the next time it wants to. I am NOT experiencing a loss of power.
oh yea, 2009 Land Cruiser 1HZ.
I took a look at the glo plugs, cleaned the rail, and am waiting to see if this makes a difference. Anyone know where the controller is?? Is there a temperature sensor for the glo system?

Thanks,
plex

if the engine feels sluggish and since it is a rotory pump and the glow light comes on and off, could it be the power to the system is flashing on and off ...
a stretch for sure but as Rosco says, once running the HZ only needs air and fuel, there is no computor control to the engine (other than fuel shut down)

Divorce the entire circuit by running a + jumper directly to the fuel cutoff solenoid.
This will eliminate one problem while you search for the culprit.

We just had a HZJ79 with a fuel issue...our was a short.
