I finally got time this morning to finish pulling the head.

I dropped the head at the machine shop this morning. He said that it looked like the HG was blown between the cylinders. They will check for cracks and resurface it. Hopefully it is not cracked or warped.

I just go a call. It is a cracked head. Now to find another head. Does anyone have a head laying around?

That SUCKS, sorry. You and I are in almost the same boat as I'm chasing down a similar problem in a 66'. Looks like my head is not cracked though, some other issue obviously

I am glad your head is not cracked. The machine shop said that mine was cracked on both sides of the combustion chamber all of the way through. Now the search is on for a 2f or 3f head.

Can someone help guide me on what head to look for? I know I need the chambers to match, but what else do I need to look for?

Update Gerold has new life. I got a replacement head thanks to @thill. I was out of commission with a finger injury, and friend of mine came over and helped me adjust the valves after my wife helped me lift the head onto the block. after a few pumps of the pedal he was alive and happy again. My wife got a video I will have to post up of my girls in the truck as we started the engine. Needless to say they were very excited. This was April 1st. Grace has been learning how to drive a manual in the evenings after school. I have been fixing issues during the day and enjoying driving him around.

Great news!!

Congratulations...you can't stop now that the girls are dreaming of driving it.

We have been driving Gerold around and fixing little things. I have a wiring issue I need help with. Does anyone know where this wire goes?

I am also wondering if I am missing something behind the headlight.

I moved the radio and removed some PO wiring, and now my turn signal and windshield wipers don't work. I know that the red with a black stripe is that circuit.
The headlight issue is when they are on and I get a glow on the windshield.

An update on the wiring issue. The starter went out, and I was going to go with a newer gear reduction, but the 78 has 2 small wires going to it where as normally the solenoid wire and the and the battery + are the only wires on the starter. The gear reduction did not have a terminal for the other wire and my daughter was wanting her ride back ASAP. while fixing this I noticed that the main harness hot wire where the fuse link is supposed to be mine has a fuse holder that had melted. After replacing the failed fuse holder the turn signals and wipers started working. Now I have a happy wife and oldest daughter. I am not really sure how to get my youngest daughter in that state. Any advice on that would be helpful. I might just have to get my youngest a FJ40.
