Yes. Just make sure you have shut off the main breaker. Personally if I didn't know a lot about house power I would have a electrician install a switching box for you.

I'm a EE. I rewired my Breaker box to wire the basement and add 240V for a Kiln and another 240 V line for a Steam Room. Does that count?

It counts if you do it right and install a proper transfer switch!

I'll be doing the same thing to my house and this thread is providing to be useful. The "transfer switch" thing seems a nice option but not necessary. It sounds like if you have an established procedure for separating yourself from the grid and then backfeed the house, then all *should* be well. Using a dryer or a welder outlet to feed the house sounds reasonable to me.

Thanks.

That's what I am planning on doing. need to build a cable with two plugs.

Procedure,
Shut the main off
Throw all breakers
Install the plug in the dryer plug
Start generator and allow to stabilize
Throw Dryer plug at Fuse box to on
Throw frigerator (Kitchen) plug to ON, wait til surge is over.
Turn other breakers on as needed not to exceed 3500 watts

When neighbors lighs come on.
Turn off generator and unplug
Turn main on
Turn other breakers on
