You would need a Euro spec clutch pedal and brake pedal and accompanying bits and peices. You can get all those bits new through Japan4x4 (Mark Stedman) or Yan @Akella
Does the clutch pedal mount to the existing pedal shaft? Would the conversion require a skinnier brake pedal? And I assume this requires fabbing hydraulic lines from the master to the slave?

I WAS very interested in doing this, but then the :princess: (who DDs the 80) kiboshed the idea pretty quick. Apparently operating an iphone, drinking a latte, and mashing gears don't go well together. But oh how I would LOVE to have the control, power, and mpg that a 5 speed would bring. Oh well. :meh:

Hey guys.. I wanted to start seeing who is serious to proceed. I have 2 who already confirmed. I expect to be taking 50% deposits in the next 2 weeks or so. I have space for 10 conversion kits. PM me to confirm your spot.

Is it crazy to ask that u perform one import / install first ? This way you know the ropes ?

I'm in the process of trying to find a plastic molder to try and have oem subtank overhead consoles reproduced , I'm going to do one as a pilot and if success, I'm going to market a small group buy

There are some threads on here documenting a H151F conversion. Its a straightforward swap. It wouldnt be cost effective to bring just one over to do proof of concept.

Good luck with the overhead console.. would like to see it when you have it done!

Everyone always says this. I guess I'm in the minority that prefers a manual.

I am with you partner, and wouldn't have an Auto in anything I drive (except the nice ride the misses cruises in).

I saw a couple of 80's with 5 speeds in Japan. They were sweet machines, all diesel, and all very capable on the trail.

If I ever get another 80 I am going to look you up!

I'm interested but not the first go around. You anticipate a second trip to do this again? Personally for added security on my end, I'd like to see a successful round go through first before pulling the trigger.

I'm watching this thread like a hawk

I just got duped by an Australian claiming to have all brown interior parts I neededneeded

I can see why the hesitation, and I respect that. I just got dipped by METRICTLC for $1300. I am not out to defraud anyone, just want to be able to fuel my cruiser addiction just like the other vendors here. I hope to bring a second container hopefully shortly after the first one is unloaded and all parts shipped.

First, let me say that Frank is a good guy and mudder for sure. We've done business together without a hitch. I hope to meet him one day in Tejas if you know what I mean :)

The swap is very neat and I would love to see some in the States. That said, at that pricepoint, I would have hoped these trannies would have been new, or at have a warranty on them. Would they be rebuilt? Trannies are a different beast, the average mechanic won't work on them and pass them off to a tranny shop as it requires many special tools ($$$) and expertise. If I were a prospective buyer, I would want to know what is entailed when it's "gone through".

Another note, this swap won't be for everyone. There will be people who will say, "I bought my entire truck for less than that". Currently, the 80s are the "inexpensive" trucks (relatively compared to 40s or 6xs), but this will certainly change in time. On the flipside, there are many 80s that are worth quite a penny and doing this will increase it more so.

Lastly, you may want to reach out to a few shops who specialize in cruisers around the country. Many people are not on mud. @orangefj45 @Poser @torfab @green grass hopper @Trollhole are just a few of the good ones off the top of my head, who may be interested in selling this to their customers.

I'm glad you can see it from the other side.

... you have the backing and support of a mud member.

I am willing to put my 10 years of membership on the line to back up a sale. I am putting up all my trust worthy connections and offering it to the mud community.

While I'm sure you mean what you write, this doesn't really have any tangible value to anyone but yourself. 10 years of membership on an online forum doesn't mean much nor am I sure what it would mean to "put up" all your connections. I'm not trying to throw stones here, just playing devils advocate from a consumers stand point. So you get 10 people to bite and collect their money, there really is nothing stopping you from just disappearing really. There isn't much any mud member can do about it unless they live close. To get my money back I'd have to hire a lawyer near where you life and file a law suit in your local court system to even attempt to get it. The cruiser you see in my sig is actually one that I just bought in Miami and drove it home. I did as much research as possible and asked as many questions as I could but still got a little burned by some lies and some hidden issues that I am still discovering. Clearly I can't do much about it.

In the end, like I said I'm not trying to throw stones or trash talk you I'm just a guy who tires to be cautious with my money.

In the end I truly have some interest in converting my FZJ80 to a manual trans or else I wouldn't even be commenting here. I really want to see this happen so I'll be watching with interest.

-cheers

I've always wanted a 5 speed again...can I afford it?? Eh maybe, depending on how many little bits add up.

Some points of discussion perhaps:
-I too was thinking from the first post "new" or darn near it transmissions. No offense, but if the trans has 200k miles on it the price is silly high to me, @beno gave a comparison that makes it seem like a small step from what we have here, but that price is a made new trans. Wrecked damage if they are salvage parts? It's kind of an issue to drop that much money with a potential rebuild as the outcome. How would they be tested here without installing/running it under load?

-Would our existing full time transfer case just bolt up?

-I would expect a greater than $300 difference when you take out the part time hubs, etc from the lot as well. Any more details on a 5 speed only while maintaining full time 4wd kit would be great. I can see perhaps leaving the transfer case to keep it a sealed unit and the end user selling that off.

-What does this do to the ECU by taking the auto trans out? (yes I'm sure I could research)

-How much side clearance does a clutch cylinder need in that firewall hole. Seriously got a lot of crap running through there now.

 man, I think it would be awesome, just hesitant to "jump".

".

This crossed my mind as well.

In the Audi world that I'm also involved in I can access the ECU via a program and cable and simply change a couple coding digits to tell it that it's now to operate as a if a manual trans is attached.

I think I should chime in and say that the price isn't really that terrible. I know you can buy a whole 80 for that much, but not a 5-speed 80. I would consider this for some customer builds, seems like a reasonable way to go. I would be interested in some average miles on these tranny's if available.

Thanks Jay!! I hope to see you soon in TX... As for the condition of the transmission I am pushing for low miles wrecked or rebuilt trannies. I will have more information while I am on the ground (in Colombia), it would be great to just put an order and have it show up on your door, but Colombia being a 3rd world country per say, things are better done in person. I have everyone's best interest in mind so sourcing perfect trannies are my main concern.

I'm glad you can see it from the other side.

I appreciate your POV and for documenting the above scenario, While I can understand that being in an online forum is just that. To some its more, for me its 10 years of participation, selling, buying, going to events, making lifelong friends, sharing a passion for the Land Cruiser. And I for one cherish that more than anything. Being a mudder has opened many doors for me atleast, it has gotten me job interviews, it has gotten me out of a bind because some one was near to help out. Its way more than a forum its a community. People on here will go out of their way just because your a mudder. And I know to all the above there are the bad situations we may get into from time and time due to a few bad apples. As for putting up my connections, its just that. Its using up my network of resources and putting them to use for the benefit of our online community.

To answer your questions:

You guys have to account for all the leg work required to get it here, exporting in Colombia and importing in the US. I just dont walk into the Walmart of Toyota parts and say I want 10 5speed conversions shipped to Miami. I wish it was that easy. There is more to it than just that.

I think the question for the Full time case bolting up, I would have to say that it does, but I will confirm that when I am there. Or if the parts guros can chime in on this @beno @cruiserdan

Normally the trannies sell with transfer, atleast that is in Colombia. So removing them is really not a big value reducer.

The whole on the firewall that we all use to run wiring into the cab is the whole used for the Clutch master and slave cylinder.

thanks for more info @FloridaFJ80 . No, I know you don't just go ask for parts...but it seemed like you were getting newer units at first though.

As for the transfer case attached, no big deal, I'm sure there is a market for it here with others. But the other parts you noted like part time hubs and whatnot would not be required to do any leg work if we didn't want them.

Anyway, I'm still watching to see what pans out.

So your going to be obtaining even the trim to fit us USA trucks who are left hand drive in SA?

I don't a right hand configuration and I would want the correct chocolate brown console cover. Will that be included

As a related but tangent point @FloridaFJ80 , what would a half cut (to avoid import issues) with the manual trans included run (just ballpark, not a hold your toes to the fire guarantee)?

Yes, I'm certain shipping would be more but then all the bits and pieces would be there to swap over and there would be possibly less work on your end tearing out parts plus we could end up with spares for engine parts, body panels, etc as well. Just an idea.
