I noticed a gas puddle under the engine area yesterday, so I got to searching and see that fuel is dripping from the bottom hose attached to the charcoal canister. Since it just hangs there, I figure it is a drain hose of sorts, but my guess is only if something else in the system fails.

I got to thinking the cas cap vent might be plugged, so I go to take it off and was surprised at how much pressure was in the tank. It hissed for a full 3 seconds letting off pressure. It was 85° F inside my garage at the time. I figure with only 4 gallons of gas inside the tank, it could build up pressure, but should fuel be pushed out of the canister drain? I don't believe i have ever seen this happen before.

The vent on the gas cap allows air to enter the tank, but not leave. Is this normal? Seems backwards to me. I thought tanks were meant to hold a vacuum so vapors don't get expelled into the atmosphere. Perhaps I have the wrong cap installed?

That canister is your vent for these engines. I'd check to make sure lines are hooked up right

Over filling the tank has done that to me.

The tank only has 4 gallons inside since I replaced the pump at the start of this build. The tank is building pressure inside without the engine running, so it has to be due to expansion. All the lines are hooked up properly, so if this is normal, then I will look for another cap that is vented. I don't like fuel being dumped on the ground inside my shop. A vented cap should stop the pressure build up.

Of everything is hooked up right check the canister. It's not normal.

What exactly will I be looking for when I check the canister? It looks like a sealed unit to me. All rubber hoses look in good shape. All appear to be hooked up properly. What else is there to check?

BTW, I loosened the gas cap and the drip went away.

if you know someone with a vacuum pump, they can suck out your charcoal canister and if it's not bad, you will be good to go...just don't try to squeeze in that extra few cents of fuel when you fill up.

Like I have been saying... The tank has never had more than 4 gallons in it since I have owned the truck. I cleaned out the tank when Installed a new pump and only put in 4 gallons. All lines are hooked up like they are supposed to be including a brand new filter. It's just surprising to me that the tank would be allowed to build up pressure to the point it blows fuel out the canister vent. Wondering if the cap is at fault. I will swap on my spare cap and see if I can repeat it. As it currently sits, the cap is on loosly and this has stopped the dripping.

I'd replace the canister first. As it shouldn't be allowing pressure to build up.
