Some useless information

Mapsource City Select may be legally loaded up to two GPS units without any additional costs.
I don't think that's useless...I might pick up another unit :D

so to use it in a car you HAVE to buy the auto kit?

Agreed on all counts!

Do you know that is needs the AUTO kit which is another $200 or so? A little tidbit a few friends didnt know until too late! Still a smoker of a systme though!

Have you looked into mounting it in your 80? Or are you mounting it into your quad cab tacoma? The 80's have an odd layout for mounting this type of device. I am looking for ideas and pics.

Thanks

To use it in a car, you need to buy the RAM mount for a car.
If you want to have detailed topo maps and city maps, you need to buy memory for it. I have it with 128Mb.
Then there are the maps. If you want turn by turn directions, you will need to get City Select and if you want TOPO maps, you need to buy Garmin's Topo maps.

Plus if you want to listen to the turn by turn directions, you need to buy the 12V adapter with speaker.

I added all up the other day and it comes down to about $800 without the TOPO maps.

No, not necassarily! You can use it in the car fine, but it wont have the level of detail maps to offer turn by turn routing, which some of us like and some dont. I personally like it. I just bought the 276C with the Auto kit and couldnt be happier! I bought the much oogled ram mount and arent too happy with the amount of bouncing it does, so i will be making something custom with an external antenna somewhere.

You could use the 276C fine if you use is for offroading and such. Load a topo map and go! Not sure if it has any internal memory, but the auto kit comes with a 128mb card which holds a ton! The memory cards are available seperate and go all the way to 256mb

Unsure of the 95+ 80's but the 93 i got has a funky shaped dash that makes it very awkard to mount. My GPS V fit no problem, but the bigger 276C doesnt fit in the same spot. The RAM mount is a nice fix if your not a perfection freak like me!

FYI -

The 276c will be replaced on August 29th by the upgraded/updated 376c. The current gpscity price for the the 276c plus auto kit package is equal to the pre-order price of the new 376c without auto kit ($809 iirc).

For what it's worth......

This suction mount and speaker came w/ my Garmin. The suction mount holds even offroading but jiggles alot. I noticed when the temp dropped, the suction dropped off at night. I am looking at getting a more sturdy suction mount for it.

I like the voice feature though, very good warning to pay attention for an upcoming turn.

I spoke with the Garmin tech at length about the 276C vs the 376C and there was no mention of the 276c being replaced, it just came out not too long ago.

I believe the 376C will just be a completely different unit, i may be wrong, if so, please correct me!

Where did you hear this?

Hey Guys I just got this reply from Garmin when i emailed them questioning this:

Thank you for your inquiry.

We have recently announced the 376 unit
http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap376c/ however, the 276c is not being
discontinued. All of the accessories for the two units are the same.

Thank you and best Regards,

Its a damn good thing too! I would be one pissed off mofo to spend $800 or something about to be replaced!

The PO of my 97 had a slick mount attached to the top of the dash. It amounted to a slab of thick vinyl with a strong adhesive on the underside as well as a piece of thin sheetmetal between it and the dash. The sheetmetal made it rock steady and the adhesive worked well. Atop it was a universal mount attachment that was threaded. Took me a half hour of careful picking and some cleanup with adhesive remover, but I was so impressed with it that I carefully looked it over for a manufacturer to no avail.

I got the 4" RAM Mount! If you do a lot of driving on rough roads, or any even remotely high speed offroad, it moves to much IMHO.

I am working on something custom for the center console using an external antenna

Any questions, lemme know

Well I orderd up a 276C, the car kit/city map combo and Ram Mount, should have it in a few days, I will report back my findings. Hey.....its also a business expense ;)

I bought myself a Garmin 60C and the car mount. Does almost everything else the others do. Perfect portability for long hikes. I unclip it and go.

Coming into this thread late...

With Scott and Alvaro's fine recommendations. I now have the 276c for almost two weeks. I like it very much! Since I all ready own three XM units I opted out of the 376c.

The unit is easy to learn and fun to use. The turn by turn helps me out a lot when I am in a strange place looking for a location or need to return a rental car in an unfamiliar place.

I went out on a hike this past weekend and brought along the 276c. I was able to get lost on purpose then find my way back and enjoy all the calculations.

Takes a bit of time to customize - Due to Garmin not offering Mac USB drivers I am now looking into a PC portable to have along with me for way-point and map loading. ( I had a friend with a PC let me use it to load in 200 megs of my favorite spots.

The ram mount is solid and out of the way on my windshield - vibration off road is medium but the mount hold on well. The antenna locks on to the sat. fast. and the screen redraws very fast.

I am still learning the depths of this amazing unit

Wish it used the CF memory cards then you could load a gig in...

I bought the Cities select v.7.0 DVD and the USA Topos - ( not detailed enough, missing many FS roads) I am needing some better topo's right now :(

Cool, you wont be dissappointed! If ya got any questions, feel free, i use mine extensively and just rigged up and external antenna and hard wired the 276

Where did ya get it from? I found GPS city to have the best price!

Pasquale, there is also a Nat'l Parks Topo from Garmin that goes into more detail for those areas.

I agree it would be awesome w/ CF cards
