I have a set of 80 axles that are geared and ARB locked. I have a chance to pick up a 91 4runner with a spun bearing for very, very cheap.
I wanted to throw these axles underneath with a SAS swap. I know the front is doable but the rear seems like the off set will interfere with the gas tank. Has anyone done this before?

I want to keep it on the street so I don't just want to throw a fuel cell in the rear cargo area.

Is there a simple way to relocate the gas tank elsewhere??

I've thought about this too, but after doing a A343 or NP242 case to get AWD...

But for you, since you're talking about putting dump truck axles under a Smart Car...

I'd just sell or trade the axle(s)...

1: The axles will shift the weak link to the lesser-duty drive train...

2: A 91 is already rear coil... Leaf might be another story as the conversion would be half as much involved...

Sell or trade, or look into a T100, Sequoia, Prado, etc, or Isuzu axle FWIW...

80 axles are WAY overkill IMO.

The front is 8"... So a V6 rear is not exactly going to be an issue there...

IMO, that's not really the big issue... The big issue is where and how to route the filler hose...

Unless you custom make another fuel door, you'll have to use the existing one. Then you have to worry about it being too high or too low then how's that going to effect filling it.

That's the biggest issue I see...

The other issue is the output on your 4R is centered and the rear axle is not.

I have been trolling the wrecking yards for a while now, I want to do the same thing lt1fire. I want to flip the rear housing for less offset & run my centered tcase. If you decide not to use your FZJ80 axles maybe we can work out a swap. I have some live axle parts trucks here.

This is easy just use the rear end housing from the 4Runner and use the third member from the 80. Aren't they both 8" anyway? The front end is just doing a coil sprung SAS.

Nope. Rear diff on a 80 is not the same as a mini-truck. The front diff on an 80 will work in the rear of a mini with modification, but it's not recommended. The front diff on an 80 is a reverse rotation/high pinion and you will be spinning the gears in the weak direction when placed in the rear.

9.5 inch is what it is spec'd at but it is actually a little smaller

Just run the front axle FJZ80 and use rear axle that's already under it. You'll need to swap oil pans on your motor, I would run the 80 series front coil suspension to match your rear coil suspension.

Campinglab runs this same setup, I have seen it in action and it works well.

It's all in how complicated you wanna make this thing, but only thing the Fj80 axle is going to give you is bigger knuckles and a wider axle...

I'm almost positive the swipe seal rebuild kits fit every SA Toyota out there but a 80 series...

And I personally like to get between things (ok, it's not THAT wide) so I would opt for a Hilux axle and just put the Reverse Rotation diff in it... B/c the axle shaft diameters are the same. So you're just gonna go through all that fabbing for bigger joints and a wider axle..? Keeping in mind it's coil sprung (if you're going to leave it that way)

You're also forgetting the MONUMENTAL task of steering...

Hilux,

Its not really that big of a deal. Radius arm suspension setups are not that difficult to set up and with it being coil sprung there is no steering problems. If he did decide to run leafs there are options out there for double shear steering and there are more coming thru the tube as we speak. The axle is wider, so wheel spacers in there rear might be needed to match the front. Birfs are bigger on the 80 series, the axle tubes are stronger, and the brakes are better. If he has the axle it would be a good choice to use. All soild axle swaps out there require a decent amount of work. There are plenty of company's putting out knuckle rebuild kits for there BTW.

To bad your not closer! I've got a 91 runner (two door) that needs a fender and IFS control arm. Would be perfect for those axels. I'd let go for $1000.

It's also even more rare because of the 22re 5 speed combo.
