Fuel pump

Went to my local auto parts store to get a stock fuel pump for a `76 FJ40.When I got the pump,there were directions saying that I needed to use an insulator between the block and the pump.If I didn`t use it the pump and or engine would be damaged.Went back,got the spacer,put it in and no fuel to the carb.Took the pump back off and the arm on the pump had just a tiny rub mark on it.Removed the spacer,put it all back together,and the truck started right up.This spacer,I believe was used on later model trucks from `79-up. Just thought I`d share my experiance.And this is after I replaced 2 electric fuel pumps(from NAPA,$35 each)that burnt out after 350miles.

if you measure the length of the arm from the mounting face(on old FP) of the pump it will tell you if you need the spacer, yep some use it and some don't., not sure what years, my 65 doesn't, my 82 does(and I assume a fj60 is the same)

also some of the fuel pumps need longer bolts

I also found that a Carter fuel pump is actaully a OEM Toyota(Koysen) for 1/2 the price

The root of the problem is partly explained by Landpimp's discovery. Manufacturers often are NOT manufacturers anymore, and just re-box parts of differing origins. I have seen different thickness pumps marketed for all the years and, because the re-boxing "manufacturer" doesn't even know what is going in his box half the time, they add the disclaimer to all.

it was for a 64 135 F, won't work on a 2f. But just check with a parts store, I think Butch mentioned that most Carters are OEM.
