Geee this thread has grownen. I am sorry that I have not been able to responed till now. It is hard sometimes to break away from regearing a truck and such. It sound like the infromation is correct so far. Dan can provide the month break (I think he did in early post). But most 91-94's that I have worked on have had the thinner hubs. All 95-97 that I have worked on have had the thicker hubs. As for the shim, I do not really know if it is needed yet. I will find out shortly. The reason I think it may be needed is for when the drive shaft is in and you are wheeling or using fulltime. this allows the stub shaft to ride in the proper tolerence to the brass bushing in the spindle. it may not take the full .300 shim. I really have not had the time to play with this yet. This really is not fully worked out by me yet. But with the list members playing with this too, It may all sort it self out quickly. Thanks for the pictures Kurt. I am off to ski in the mountains this weekend and will get back on monday. You guys are great. later robbie

funny thing about this is that we found this out one day working on a 95 truck which we stuck in Newfields and the flanges would not work (almost 3 years ago) we called the guys at cvj and they did not know anything about different thickness of flanges. The learning curve is great to teach us how to scramble.

I ran the Aisin hubs on my 4-Runner with FZJ80 front axle. No problems, bolted right on. 79 - 85 (USA) Mini truck will work, along with 40/60/62 series hubs, anything w/ 30 spline outers. The 86 and up IFS uses smaller 27 spline outers.

well, i got my aisin hubs in, now i just need to clean them up, get a new paper gasket...and wrench away!!! Oh I do have to dig up .3" of spacers though (to behind the c clip)....

...thanks robbie for testing this out, I hope my numbers are just as good as yours, especially to my trip to Colorado this august with GCC/LSLC/TAC annual san juan mountain run.

NOTE:
Before you do the mod. Remove your driveshaft and try first.
When I had my driveshaft off (for other reasons) I didn't like the way my 80 reactec.
With the old and worn shocks and springs, the torque from the motor when you put it in gear would make the cab rise up or down, depending if you put it in D or R. It would rise up and down a very noticeable amount (like it was a Kalifornia low rider with air shocks)

THe other thing that I didn't like was when you hit the throttle hard (from a dead stop) There was a slight hesitation that was not noticable with the front driveshaft on.

The last thing is to get extra driveshaft nuts and bolts (from Toyota) as they tent to round out the head when you remove them.

Drove 1500 miles last week. Basically Boston to Virginia and back with a few stops along the way. Highway was either 75~80 or stop and go. Very little city type driving. Averaged 14.1 mpg running 89 octane. Not bad by what I've seen and I noticed a drop when the X-Terrains went on last fall so maybe a little better when the BFG ATs are back on. Next week it's long island and back but I'm running 87 octane to see if the milage changes.

did i overlook a post where you mentioned if you did this mod or not? i.e. was this with only the shaft gone or with it gone and hubs unlocked. Also what sized tires and what kind of gearing? was mileage taken from gps or did you do speedo correction?

thanks!

Sorry, I'm running 4.88s, w/35" tires, speed corrected and traditional setup. Just posted as a comparison. If you're not getting something similar to me you might want to check for problems with your truck before thinking it's fine and jumping into the hub mod.

So far the mpg seems the same with the 87 octane.

I'm interested in trying this out, but I can't find any 30 spline Aisin hubs for sale on the net. Where is a good place to find them new or used.
Thanks.
