I noticed a few of you have done this. Did anyone write it up with pics?

...also, I read this entire thread and did not gleam if this could be done with 96/97 cruisers. With gas prices like they are, I would be more than happy to do mine, but do not know how to retrofit the hubs.

btw, robbie...what's "4.7l 1FZ"???

Yes Kumar this will work for the 95-97 versions of the 80 series as there really is not any differnces with the drive train except if you have the drum brake version. You do need the center diff lock switch.
4.7 l 1FZ is bored out 4.5 that I rebuilt my self. The block is milled .010, head milled .020. Head is also ported and polished, Intake runners polished. Conservtive HP estimate is around 270 hp, with about 325 torque (I will dyno it here in the near future to find true figures). later robbie

Damn Robbie, you got's some getup and go!!!

off topic a bit, I know you are working on turbo and thought I would let you know that unichip is coming out with a "plug and play" chip. Emailed them about a local dyno with 4wd capability (none in the area ;( and they mentioned they now have a new chip coming out that you tell them the specs of your vehicle and they will pre-program the chip (small box). The tundra group is trying this right now, but it's awful expensive at over 700. What sized turbo where you thinking of? T???

...also, back to the hubs. do I need a spacer behind the c-clip.?

Thanks, as always for you technical expertise (I bet you can't hear that enough)

well My wife took this trip to santa fe last week and I did the freewheel hubs and took out the front drive shaft + locke dthe center diff. She went from about 13 (last trip to santa fe down 285) to 15 this trip. On the way back she came up Hwy 25 both times and Got 14mph and close to 16 this time.
She called me today and told me got 17.8mpg around here and a trip to colorado springs and back. Driveing typically she would only get slightly above 14 mpg.Traffic would not let her get above 70mph. She has never reported anything above 15 before in Full time drive. I think this simple mod has great benifit for better Fuel mileage per cost of mod. later robbie

Good deal Robbie! I had my front shaft out for awhile and thought I got better gas mileage, but I also noticed it drives alot different, more light and nimble, and makes you want to go faster...well atleast it does me, so I think that stole any gas savings I might have had.. :)

So if doing this mod on a '95 or newer 80-series, then we need to put a 0.3" thick spacer behind the snapring, to pull the axle further out? I'm curious because I didn't do that on my '97, have had no trouble, has been this way for about 52K miles, but I'll pull it off and put in a spacer if I need to.

Also, just curious what snapring pliers do you have? Those snaprings on the axle and other places I've found them, man do those suck to get off, or maybe I just don't have the correct tools (likely).

Thanks,
Mark Brodis

Great find Robbie! My math tells me after only 1800 miles my hubs will be paid for(with current gas prices and mileage). Plus the added bonus of the wear and tear on the birdfields.

I'm also confused about years that need the spacer and the ones that don't. So please post on the correct use of spacers.

Thank you for your excellent find and research.

will the stock hub caps still fit over aisin hubs? if not how do they look bare? I am wondering if the locking hub may visially fill enough that it looks ok without the hub cap

I don't know if the cap will fit over the hub, I lost a cap so it works well to not have the front ones on.

Here are few links to mine, and what it looks like with the hubs on:

Man, I can't find any really good ones..oh well, you get the idea...

eh, I took my caps off, cuz it looks much more "virile" without them...

Thank you, nice shots, that is even my same rims, that actually looks just fine, next step is custom shafts and rear locking hubs to match, I see you have a Nikon digital "DSCN", nice to see a LX out on the trail

the PO lost a cap on mine also, I'll bet I can find aisin hubs for about the same as the "L" hub cap

Robbie,

This sounds like a mod that lots of us might be interested in, I for one have it on my things to do. How do I know which hubs will work, are there better options in some models vs others? If there are any published docs on it, feel free to send me off to do my own study. Anything you can provide would be helpful. Thanks

hubs are IN

well, my hubs are now in. 82 truck aisin...of course. I may need to buy some of these for my 40 too :)

...once I get my wheel/tire situation worked out I'll be able to test and give mpg estimates too. I keep all my records and top of gas tank to make sure everything is consistent (all mileage by gps too).

...thanks for stepping out on this robbie, i know our other list kinda frowns on taking our rigs into 2wd, but with gas prices...it's an awful attraction.

Will FJ60 hubs work?
Are the 60 hubs the same as mini truck?
[/quote]
I think so...easiest (maybe not the best) way to check is go to Warn's webpage or somebody else who makes hubs, look up the part number for the hub for a '85 minitruck, then look it up for a FJ60, FJ40, etc...I think you'll find all the solid axle Toys use the same hub.

Good Luck..

Yep, I have a Nikon Coolpix 990 (emphasis on Cool there!) :) Had it long time now, well long for digital stuff, in Oct I'll have had it 4 years, 3.3 MP, dang good camera. It's funny even though it's 4 years old, it still takes nicer pictures than alot of my friends cameras. Not larger pictures, they have 4 to 6 MP ones, but my pictures are often clearer, better color etc. And I know how to use mine, can quickly turn off the flash, manual focus, etc...things that just make the picture better at times.

Later..

FJ60 / 62 hubs are identical to hubs from 1979 through 1984 Mini-Truck
FJ40 / 55 hubs are also identical from 1979 on - or 1980 for FJ55 & 1983 FJ40's
This also includes our northern friends BJ40/60

Joe

Well If I am reading that right then the pre 84 minis or fj60 hubs should work after that I am guessing oh wait I am guessing now.
