i removed the fuel tank today on my 80, and it sure does open a lot of space to work with. Not sure with the bend in the tube from the filling point to the tank. but i would venture to guess 'maybe'. i can look tomorrow, just pulling back will clear the frame cross member so maybe. i would try it if i had to change my filler neck, versus cutting it!
i guess the other variable is if the body has a lift on it or not.
It wasn't too much of a task to remove the tank, so it's worth a try.

i was surprised the long filler tube had a small tube inside of it. I thought the smaller 1/2 inch-ish tube was the vent, but a small 1/4 plasic hose was inside the larger filler tube.
It’s well documented that you need to lift the body or cut the filler pipe to get it out.

yep, i saw those posts as i was looking at fuel tank topics, but i dont think those consider or include if the gas tank is not installed. i could be totally wrong but that will not deter my comment which included a 'maybe' and 'i'll check tomorrow'. Now i see this is a few months old, but since i did that tank drop today, i felt i was allowed to comment

Even though you can,t get the filler pipe out with just the tank dropped. Simply slacking the tank down helps tremendously with tank side installation of the hoses. So all in all great thing to bring up. I would have mentioned this tidbit before but my tank just hit the ground 5 min ago. But yea lifting the frame is the way to go and as i mentioned previously if you go in to the job understanding this you will save a lot of time trying other things.
