front seat gear swap (Broken Seat/Missing Cap Issue, pt. 2)

I did mine a while back when my caps fell out. But now the 'other' gear on my passsenger seat went out (the one closer to the motor).

I just want to verify that it's the same gear on both sides of the shaft.

If so I will order another pair.
 
Any advice on how far to screw in the white end cap? I've seen pictures where the cap is flush with the gear housing... however mine can be screwed in much deeper.

Does it have anything to do with the "drive shaft" that connects the left and right side of the seat ?

What exactly does the end cap do ?

The end cap keeps the worm gear in alignment with the seat gear. I turned mine until it was snug and then gave it a 1/4 turn or so and used blue loctite. I also removed the complete motor assembly and pulled the gear housing from the shaft/motor so I could check the gear tension when I installed the cap. Mine was not flush either.

I thought the binding would be caused by the mis-alignment of the seat rails.

I don't understand the purpose of the white cap, or how it would cause binding...

having the cap in too far would create more load on the shaft than is necessary, which is synonymous with binding. You need it far enough in to hold the shaft on center so that the worm gear can freely turn it, but too tight and it creates more stress on the system, which can in turn strip your plastic gear. :beer:
 
I am so stoked that there is a fix. Seat stopped working the other day, pulled it apart tonight, transmission gear stripped, and cap missing. Worse, I think I picked the cap up off the PS floor a few weeks ago, did not know what it was, and trashed it. Regardless, two caps and gears ordered, hopefully we will be up and running again by the weekend.
Love my LC, but love it even more cause there are so many that are willing to freely share what they have learned, and made, for their trucks.

Amen to that! Ain't that the truth!

I just bought my truck knowing when I made the purchase that the seat switch was broken and it would need replacing. Well I took the switch apart and there was a switch that was jamming the whole thing, so then I moved it and WHIRRR went the motor but only one side moved! I was so bummed and called my brother and he said, "nah, that's easy, there's a guy who made a part to fix that issue, it's common so don't worry." I bought them and just removed and replaced my drivers seat and BAM, the seat moves forward and back!!! Thank you so much for making such a great part! It took less than an hour, it was very easy! You rock!
 
Damn! I wish I had seen this...it would have saved me half an hour "tinkering" with it this morning before getting to the same worn gear conclusion. I guess I need to read more and "reinvent the wheel" less. This forum is a great wealth of information! Ordering my set right now!
 
Glad someone replied to this, I went to do my fix a few days ago, took the seats out... yadda yadda.... looked everywhere for the caps / grears I ordered... couldn't find them.... I was looking for this thread to reorder 2 more.

TIP: Do the fix when you get them in the mail... not 6 months later.
 
My PS seat started grumbling a couple of weeks ago and my DS went out yesterday so I've ordered the complete kits and am looking forward to getting these fixed... LOVE all the LC resources on this forum!

One question, I too found the cap on my floor one day, I did a quick scan but didn't see where it came from so I tossed it I(this is a relatively new to me LC and thought it might have been a left-over piece of debris from the PO). I note that all the tips & instruction recommend that the seat be moved all the way back and up prior to removal. My DS will move forward but not back... two questions, 1) is this an indicator of something else broken i.e. switch mechanism? 2) the seat is almost all the way back, will this be sufficient to get to the PITA front faceplate screws?

My DS was the same; it would move forward but not back. I discovered that it would in fact move back if I took a "one step forward, two steps backward" approach to the movement. So, try using the switch to bump the seat forward, then backward until it binds and stops, then bump it forward again to relieve the binding, then backward again until stop. Repeat until you get it where you need it. It worked for my seat, hopefully it will work for yours until you can get the parts to fix it from gamiviti.com.
 
Works great, takes a little more than an hour, would like to note that the front of the seat needs to be tilted back to it's highest point to make the cover removal and gear disassembly much easier.

I had top my PS back in and hook back up to make this adjustment, probably mentioned earlier I likely overlooked that advice.

Seat controls are reversed

Got the gears installed and the end caps. Worked great till I find out the slide back and forth controls are functioning in reverse. Any ideas what I screwed up?
 
Hour on the first side, :beer:less intense hour on the last one. Note that if you can, put the seat in topped out vertical beforehand, makes it possible to remove the plastic trim piece on the seat front. :beer: And if the seat was crooked before you took it out, it could be when you put it back in. Surefire way to get shaft alignment right is to count threads, :beer:(hill, dale, both if you like) can't go wrong. :banana: Great to have the gears, maybe take a look at a thermoplastic solution to wobbblly mirrors? I think the demand is out here. :cheers:
 
If the seat moves in the opposite direction, you need to take the gear assembly and turn it around, so that now the new cap is on the tunnel side of the seat, not the door side. That's how the PS side was before you took it apart. OR, it should be mild entertainment each time someone moves the seat, maybe leave it that way for a while.
