I know this is a old forum but is it bad to shift the car in gear when front propellor shaft is removed and no center diff locked I did it on accident and made some horrid noises

The only advantage I find converting to a part time 4wd is the elimination of front diff clunk, however, there are many disadvantages.

I mainly do highway driving do about 500 miles a week and getting tired of the clunking in the drive shaft and front diff. Rebuilding the the whole diff while I’m in there wheel hubs and bearings, diff bearings, side shaft, drive shaft, and cv’s. What are the disadvantages? Mainly off road ability?

Pros
Less wear on birfs (particularly chromo/300M stuff) & inners
Less vibs and wear on front driveline (no clunk)
Ability to limp home with broken diff or axle (easily)
Less moving mass (some report fuel economy gains)
Some prefer the handling of a traditional LC setup.

Curious what the cons list is...

How big a deal is it to rebuilt the front diff? I'm getting sick of my clunk, after I replace the front axles and flanges in a few days, there will be nothing left to replace to eliminate it.
