I stumbled upon an 89 (i think) Toyota 1ton dually, 2wd, with a fuel injected engine. Thats all I know about it until monday. my question is did they ever come in 4wd? What engine is most likely in it? 3.slow? or maybe the 22ret? tranny? G58? how difficult would it be to convert to 4wd? as simple as finding axles+springs+tcase+all the mounts? Are these really 1ton rated? Like i could pull my hilux or some hay around on it?

G58? w56 g52 or another g serieshow difficult would it be to convert to 4wd?you dont do that. it makes no sense. as simple as finding axles+springs+tcase+all the mounts? its not simple as that. the frames are different. you buy a 4x4. Are these really 1ton rated?yes Like i could pull my hilux or some hay around on it?no. you dont put your truck on it. your truck weighs 2.5 tons. you put one ton in it. and can pull your truck behind it.
.....

i want to see a picture of this thing!

Dont know the rim size but if your thinking about converting it to 4WD. Might be why no ones done it yet.

Pretty rare, they are rated based on the trucks weight so still pretty gutless.

Nothing special.

Cab, EFI dont know the frame, Gotta be worth ??? Separated is how I would value the truck myself.

No

22R, 22RE or V6 like I said nothing special

tranny? G58? how difficult would it be to convert to 4wd? as simple as finding axles+springs+tcase+all the mounts?

most I've seen are AT

swap should be :meh: . Look at how Marlin and Allpro have the jigs to make the spring shackle mounts in a IFS convert.

Are these really 1ton rated? Like i could pull my hilux or some hay around on it?

look up.

the only 2wd yoter i would by is one with a moter home on it. thats it. those things are dogs. like sick, wounded, three legged, hungry dogs.

Actually the 2wd yotas take off better than the 4wd ones with the same engine/tranny due to less weight. They also usually got a MPG or two better fuel economy.

It could be converted to 4wd but you would need to do a solid axel swap and lift it some. The 2wd has different front suspension mounts than the 4wd. I'd also recommend swapping the transmission when adding a transfer case. There are shifter issues converting a 2wd tranny to 4wd use, but it can be done.

The ONLY part of that one-ton that might be worth anything is the rear axle. But, they are 5-bolt dualies, and sprung under. The rest is a pretty standard 2WD truck. Can it be converted to 4WD? Yes, there's been a few write-ups on Pirate of people that have done it. I think they are crazy, but anything is possible.

essentially what i want to do with it is make it a tow rig. i dont know if ill even get it yet, but if i do, im thinking fuel efficent farm truck that could haul a round bale on the back, and thats why i want to convert to 4wd. As soon as fall comes im going to be installing a new front axle in my mini and probably hi-steer so i was thinking, that with a little welding, grinding, beating, and a few beers it could be a offroad oreinted farmtruck that gets bettr than 3.2 mpg. stupid 454...

If you want to haul a bale, I'd set it up as a bale unroller. You will have to chop the rear a bit to get the weight closer to the axel or add weight to the front. One of the locals has one converted to 4wd and has a 1 ton feed bin on it.

THat thing would absolutely SUUUUCCCCKKKK with a round bale in the back of it ;)

Have you ever seen those foreign rigs on TV with the 6" thick spring packs?

All you have to do is just that, to make any Hilux a 1 Ton just get you some spare leaves and disassemble the packs and make your own.

And from a safety standpoint please make sure your platform can handle what you want it to do. Out side a bail of hay I don't know what you have planned for it but if you think of it as a Chevy it might get you hurt.....and I'd hate see that. :frown:

Just build you some spring packs on a Hilux, flat bed it, the DT can handle it, and the Tons is nothing special.

Also IIRC there is a thing called a "Dually Adapter" that is a bolt on and lets you bolt another rim to it. I wouldn't be surprised if the rating on it is lower though, IDK, maybe its just for looks.

Its in missouri, but I might know of some in cali if i can get ahold of my grandpa. Hes in the fresno area.

So if i get it i was thinking ultimate toyota hauler rig. using the original toy drivetrain, converting to 4wd, and SUPER low gears

That would be awesome, a tow rig that gets 8 mpg and averages a whopping 5 mph...

You need to find an old 1972 C30 Chevy and turn it into a hauler. GVWR is 14,000lbs.

(I just happen to have one for sale that is sitting next to my shop)

We have all kinds of tow rigs, but there all chevys! And they all get horrible mileage, cept for the new one. V4 technology really makes a difference when on the interstate! But to keep in the toyota family would be awesome!

Man were just letting all the air out of your balloon.

See Mace's post, sorry but its just not gonna work, and after all the modding its just not gonna be worth it. :frown:

See Mace's post

And did you mean I4?

Look, when your platform (tow vehicle) is at, or SMALLER than your objective its just dangerous, and all the labor and $ just wont have you with any results.

:frown: I feel bad now, NO I DON'T! This could save your LIFE!!!

k, i get it. dont make a very good idea, and no not I-4 it is V-4, where the motor shuts off 4cylinders at a constant speed (around here 75mph) on interstates.
