2f rebuild on my 60. Engine has been installed for 3 days. Tranny/transfer left on vehicle. Almost everything is hooked up. Yesterday while hooking the down pipe from the manifold to the exhaust I found the pictured hairpin clip on the ground...under the clutch area.

My guess is that it's from the clutch fork area but I'm not sure and so far I can't figure it out. Thought maybe it's for the rod on the clutch slave which right now is just hanging there. But I can't picture how it would install. Possibly it doesn't belong anywhere near the clutch, but I think it does. Hopefully someone can recognize this clip & point me in the right direction.

Def part of clutch fork. I’m pretty certain I’ve seen it in threads. Just search it.

Doesn’t look like what I found but who knows... Photo is in this thread.

that's the throwout bearing attachment clip

the one he found is what holds that pivot ball onto the clutch fork

I see that now. I’m glad to see these diagrams. They get etched in my mind. So he obviously needs that pin installed? Looks like it doesn’t really hold a ball but a pin that needs to pivot in a circular motion? It’s a large version of some on the carb linkages.

Thanks so far...but not yet.

Fel, it's not what you have pictured, somewhat different shape AND I've got both of those clips attached to my fork.

And it's not what Jar is thinking either. The clip he's talking about is attached to 31240 in his picture (thanks!), can't tell by the pic/diagram but that clip is similar...but a different shape. And the clip in the diagram...it's also on my fork.

I agree with you both, i.e. It's in the clutch/fork area, but I can't see it in the diagram.

Jar, it's not the clip that holds the pivot ball to the clutch fork...unfortunately. I just took a picture of my fork and you can clearly see the clip that's holding the fork to the ball is there. Question: there's not supposed to be 2 clips holding that on is there?

Have you played in the valve train area lately????

#24?

Maybe Bingo! Don't know yet, I will take off the valve cover and take a look. It does look like that retainer as I remember it.

Yes, I've had that whole rocker arm apart. Will take a look and get back to you.

#24 in valve train assembly

BINGO INDEED! Good call Jar. I can't believe how this happened. Let me go fix it and I will come back & give you the back story.

Wow! Thank you both for your help.

Showing a picture of the retainer springs on my rocker arm assembly. The circular spring was just laying close to where I set it for the pic. The hairpin clip is the one I found on the ground. I know how it got there...but I would have never figured it out on my own. Here's the BACKSTORY:

My valve cover is a total PITA to take off. Total pain. I had it off several times yesterday...attaching coolant hoses to the back of the firewall, pouring oil on the rockers etc etc.

When taking my valve cover off, it always gets hung up on the back...always. Usually on the firewall itself and sometimes on the rocker assembly. Well it did so yesterday, naturally. Well I showed it a thing or two, by manhandeling it. And it tried to give me payback.

No telling what the consequences would have been if I hadn't found it laying on the ground...AND not had the help of Mud. Thank you Jaric00n and Fel. And mud.

Ha! Mine is a wench to wrestle off that back side too. It’s a matter of down w/ the fan end and up w/ the firewall end on a diagonal sorta. Or so that’s how it seems I’m holding it to pop off when it does.
In that pic above did you just set it there or did it really land there and you forgot?

Glad it was caught before Armageddon....

I bet the valve cover touched it and made it go sproing and onto the ground near your Clutch....

Still in clutch area... just a wee above the clutch fork

The round springy one was laying towards the back of the head. The hairpin clip was actually found on the ground. I just set them both up there for the picture.

Thinking about modifying the top of my firewall with a BFH. I removed my front engine hook which was a big help, but that valve cover is still a major pain. Thanks for everyone's help.

Unless your engine is farther back than (mine) there is a technique (on my truck at least) to getting the valve cover off neatly without any struggles (or popping pins). I think a long time ago (decades) it was giving me grief and I decided to figure out how the hell to get the thing off n on cleanly. When the engine was cold one day - eons ago- I think I actually practiced taking it off & putting it on until I got the hang of how it was supposed to be done without a fuss. One thing's for sure, it shouldn't need any wrestling or forcing. Once it's aligned the right way it just comes off or goes back on. Finding the technique is the key.
