I sold a 1965 FJ45 pickup probably 15 years ago to a pilot in Southern California. A few years later he sold it to another guy who called me at work one day and asked me if I would release the vanity plates that I originally had for it. The plates said "65FJ45". I am just curious as to how the old cruiser is and if the person who owns it frequents this forum, has any pics etc. I now have a 1075 FJ40 that I am getting ready to restore but would love to know what happened to that FJ45. thanks.

Whitey45 called me last night, he had owned the rig for a while. He purchased it from the guy that bought it from me. It was awsome to talk to him and hear he had fun with it and now owns another. Anyway, Shawn I don't remember where he said the owner now resides but it is in So. Cal. somehwere. I don't remember the vin# either but if you have a pair of vanity plates in your garage that say 65FJ45 then thats the one.

When I got it, there were NO plates. It is possable the last person kept the plates...

What color was it? How was it set up? (engine, wheels, tires etc...)

I remember a pilot coming by the shop with a 45 many, MANY years ago. It was the first old-school rig I'd ever seen that had ALL new brake lines on it. Somebody had done a ton of work to that brake system. IIRC, the rig was yellow, but I don't remember what shade. Don't remember the plates either.

Well it was almost entirely stock. I painted the engine catapillar yellow. The guy I had bought it from painted zebra stripes on it one night (he was drunk) and managed to only stripe one side. Whitey45 got all of that paint off so it was all white. I know he wanted to keep the plates (whitey45) because he has another 1965 FJ45 but the person that bought it from him never returned the plates. If you have a set of California plates that say "65FJ45" then get ahold of whitey45. I basicallly restored the entire rig including rebuilding the engine and much of the drive train. The only thing it needed was paint and even that was OK. It was a neat rig. The inside was red if I remember correctly so that must have been the original color. it originally belonged to a guy who drove it back and forth to his mine up here in N. California. Some friends of mine bought it from him in the late 80's/early90's then sold to another friend of mine a couple years later. Not even a month after his purchase he spun a rod brg. took it completely apart and sold it to me it about a 1000 pieces. I restored it over the next year, drove it for a few months, never took it off road to test it out and sold it (My first son was on the way). A pilot bought it from me, drove it to LA. where he wheeled it for a few years, bought a Hummer and sold the FJ45 to whitey45. Whitey drove it and sold it to build another FJ45. That's where my knowledge of it's history ends. If you have it, i'd love to see a pic.

I remember something about zebra stripes too! I don't know why. Maybe it still had them when I saw it, or maybe he had pics that he showed me.

Good luck with your search.:)

Does not sound like the one I have... I dont think mine was ever red on the inside, and I dont think anyone gave it much "love" in its life time, till I got it...

Well, the zebra stripes were only painted on one side and done with a spray can, no tape just spray. He was fairly toasty when he did it.:D
