Alright people, I need some help. I'm considering buying this vechicle but I wanted to get your opinion. What is a completely stock 89 FJ62 with 178,000 miles worth? I saw it in person and drove it around and everything seems to be in order. It is honestly in great condition. My only concern is that it has not had any sort of big ticket service items repaired. Normally, with that milage I would expect a tranny rebuild or a EFI fix of some sort, but this thing is supposedly pretty clean. Makes me worry that after a week I will be rebuilding the tranny. What do you all think? Thanks!
 
i would say around 5-6k if everything mechanical checks out. But it depends on how much your willing to spend. Although if I knew for a fact that it has been extremely well mantained, I would consider spending more than that. Well taken care of cruisers will typically last into the high 200k, 300k range without major problems, engine, tranny, t-case etc. Theres at least 2 ppl on this board with fj60's that have over 400k on them and no major problems.

One of the weak points on the truck is in fact the tranny. If it has not been taken care of i.e. regular flushes it will due for a rebuild probably sooner than later. Mine ran $1800 plus another $350 for T/C seals and U-joints.

Make sure that the A/C is sound as R-12 refrigerent is way expensive and R-134 retrofits are just not as good at keeping you cool.

Also, check the birfs to make sure that they're not weeping grease if they are you're looking at around $800 ea to have a shop rebuild them (or a very long weekend up to you neck in grease and 90 wt lube). Does the truck go into and out of 4WD or does the 4WD light stay on all the time - if it does then the solenoid is bad - add another $325.

Has the alternator been replaced? How does it charge at idle w/ all the accessories running. How about the water pump - check for antifreeze stains on both the water pump and radiator.

If it's a Texas truck then rust should not be an issue but make sure - get under the beast w/ a hammer and check the frame. Bring a magnet to check for body filler on the body panels. Check to see if the rain gutters are sealed (look inside at the A pillars for water staining)

There have been 2 other 62's with similar mileage (even same color) and maintenance in Dallas within the last 6 months that haven't sold priced at around $7-8K.

What about the 88 in Abilene for $3300? Less miles, and you could do a lot to it for the additional $5,000 dollar savings.

The above inspection items are right on- add a cooling system rebuild as a common repair for this age vehicle. Keep us posted how it goes.

A mint FJ62 is not worth more than $7-8K. At almost $10K, it bettter have: Brand new reputable tires, rebuilt front end, rebuilt tranny, spotless interior with no rips or tears anywhere, no more than 3 dings, an optima battery (maybe even two), new shocks, and a service history since it rolled off the ship to the US. Even then, I would still walk away from this truck at this price.

My advice, if you want to feel like you got ripped off every time an ad pops ups for a clean FJ62 with a price thousands less than this, buy it.
 
I have seen something like that before..."interior lugage rack" mounts to it ? ...like the hard tops had also with the inside channel? I had seen a pic of the interior lougage rack on a soft top but never knew what it mounted to...maybe to that bar?
 
did the 25's also come with interior "headache racks" like i've seen some 40's?

I haven't been able to get on line at home to post pics yet. I get many offers all the time on the white one and should just install the motor and front end from the red one. I wish I had more time!
 
Looks like you are new here. Post your location, maybe somebody with more experience will check it out with you and look at the vehicle with more scrutiny. If you don't know what cruiser related questions to ask and verify them with a cruiser fan inspecting the car, you can be taken for a bad ride.We all help each other.
 
It's got a rollbar in back. Those didn't come with a rollbar.
