'78 FJ40- Loaded Crawler

I've owned this cruiser since 1994. It has been my pride and joy for years. While I still love tinkering with it, work and life has this rig parked 360 of 365 days a year. So here it is for sale. I have well over 20K in goodies on this truck like:

-Cut and turned spring over axle with factory front leafs.
-The new Longfield 30 spline axles (inners and outers) connected with a ARB lmini locker.
-COMPLETE rebuild of the front axle has about 30 miles on it! (All new bearings and seals)
-Shackle Reverse
-36" TSL SX tires with 75% tread
-Saginaw power steering
-4x4 Labs high steering (the best available)
-NEW Jaspers 350ci TBI EFI crate engine
-Painless Wiring kit for EFI
-Factory GM EFI components from '89 Chevy Truck (including modern accessories and serpentine belt)
-Single exhaust and all alluminized with throaty turbo muffler
-fresh clutch and rebuilt t-case with perfectly functioning factory 4-speed
-Freshly rebuilt rear 3rd member with welded rear diff.
-High Angle Driveline drive shafts front and rear.
-Extened wheel base done the RIGHT way with 48" (24"/24") custom super flexy Alcan rear springs. Complete with anti-wrap leaf. i.e. no traction bars needed with these springs so the axle is free to twist and compress!
-Ramsey 9000PRO Winch
-Air ride Drivers seat
-Matching pass seat
-Wrangler rear bench seat
-Factory rear heater
-Chevy truck tilt steering wheel and column
-Complete Tiger Top soft top with full doors
-Red Top Battery
-New Master Cylinder
-New Slave and clutch cylinders
-New gas charged shocks with 11.5" of piston travel (and it uses every bit of it)
-Rear Receiver hitch
-Custom spare tire carrier w/ highlift jack mount and tow rings
-Under carriage flood lights and additional driving lights

Those are some of the highlights. This truck flexes like crazy and is still great on the street. With EFI amd other mods, it never sputters, always starts, runs smooth and quietly, and it will cruise down the highway at 80+ mph without wandering all over the road. I It has never been rolled or wrecked. All electronics work including heater, signal, etc...

Has the normal rust, but not excessive rust. I spared no expenses right down to the new matching low back bucket seats. There's always room for mods, but this truck is ready to go for most wheelers.

I'm open to offers, but am asking $8500. Located in Kansas City area.

I also have matching hard top and doors that are in good shape that I would be willing to sell seperately or with it for additional dollars.

The pictures below should help tell the story. I have several other pics if you're interested.

Please email if interested at lcgn@aol.com.

Thanks- Phil

What's the skinny on Mushro; I was thinking about a 40 from him. I'm having trouble finding a nice cruiser that I can see and drive in Pa. Looking for 78-79 close to stock suspension, V-8 ok

Let me put it this way...I paid $13k for this rig...$8k later it still needs a few things. Read my listing...new engine/tranny/rear end. Let me give you the whole story...

Here's everything:

Purchased vehicle July 2002 from Greg Mushro via Ebay.

Received vehicle in California by truck from Utah? and flatbed had a
pool of oil/fluids underneath, not a good beginning.

Cruiser also missing most of the hardtop bolts and the
mounting bolt for the power steering pump. Cruiser had moldy carpeting throughout/some diamond plate had been mounted OVER the carpeting! He said rust free/daily driver/no squeeks...YEAH RIGHT! To the deaf and blind.

Over the last three years I have:

Had a new engine ('78 Chevrolet 350) installed with an
R.V. cam, new intake
manifold/carburetor/transmission/clutch/pumpkin/rear
U-Joints. I've had various wiring maladies repaired,
bought 4 tires/rims 33x15s All terrain tires. Cruiser
came with Centerlines w/ Swamp Boggers 25% tread, too
aggressive for daily driving).

It comes with a Hardtop w/ all glass, no headliner in
very good condition. I also have a new bikini top
still in the box never installed.

It has a towbar mounted to the front bumper with quick
release pins. (This came in handy in the beginning.)

The rear deck is diamond plate. The rest of the floor
had beige carpeting that was holding moisture so I
pulled it all up and wire brushed the metal. I was
going to primer then paint the floor with flat black.

There are little bits of rust underneath and some on
the inner rim where the hardtop bolts on. The bad
areas have all been covered by diamond plate by the
previous owner.

Mechanically, I believe the Cruiser to be a very sound
machine. I would rewire the whole truck as the
underdash, while functional, is a mess. I have
repaired and cleaned it up as best as I can.

Fuel/Temp/Amp gauges are non-operable. I have
after-market temp and oil pressure gauges.
Speedometer and odometer function normally.

I can't imagine what else I can tell you. The only
reason I won't keep this vehicle is that I no longer
have any money to invest. I would like to replace the
upholstery, last owner had his wife embroider some
little pictures and nicknames. I planned on Rhino
lining the floor, installing an "easy-harness" to
rewire the whole truck at once.

Between you and me, between original purchase price
and investment, I have over $21k into this truck. I
cannot recoup what I have lost so now I am just trying
to pay off what truck debt I have left. I truly
believe anyone getting this FJ40 for $8700 is getting
a good deal.

BTW - Mushro offered to sell this rig for me, promised he could get all my money back...but that's the difference between him and me...I can't do that to someone. I'm not going to screw a guy just because he loves FJ40's. I already know what that feels like.

SO, with the exception of fuel gauge, this could be a DD with some work to be done. Is the rust under the diamond plate out of control? What about the squeaks? jwildzza@velocity.net (Send Pics of interior and underside) thanks
