"Flood Resistant" Build Up

I could be wrong, but in my personal opinion, two concerns pop up...you have reduced your turning radius, and increased your risks of bottoming out when cresting hills or rocks...both risky even in back country driving you mentioned.

Interesting build for sure. I have also thought of lengthening a 40 to 43, and I look forward to more pics

Yup, I share your concerns, the radius should not differ that much, but the #2 concern - bottoming out is something to worry about. We'll use at least a foot length steel welded inside the inner frame. My cousin is a mechanic and he bet me his shop it is okay. This time, let him win the bet.

Junk, Junk, what is that, junk, ahaaa…. Radius arms… after some checking, the’re from 70 rear ones. That’s good news, saves time for fab. If only I’m lucky enough to find the oem 70 front ones. Lots of dusts with no luck. I’m not giving up.

I found this steel wheelies, story is owner had it powder coated and to his surprise, he got flat tires 5 times on 3 wheels in 2 weeks while the rig was parking! He blamed it on the powder coated inside the wheel. As odd as it sounds, it might be true. I say aha… yup.. yup… right.. right… and end his misery. Bought it and plan on sandblasting, and paint them matte black. And no, I’m not keeping the powder coat as cool as it is, it’s bad ju-ju to continue his misery onto me.

Ohh suddenly I have a great idea, I always like the look of all solid plain (no holes) military steel wheels with lots of lugs. Can’t do nothing about the lugs, but I sure could cover all the holes. Or maybe not… it is just too much work… yes, no, yes, no.. hmm will sleep on it.

These shifters look familiar, but they all look familiar, don’t they? I know the right one is from the 60, dunno about the left one in the pic. It sure look like Honda something, or maybe Toyota something.. Anyway, I don’t like the look of that 60 shifter, it is just an ugly old school for me. Btw I try to use parts from Land Cruisers as much as I can because personally I don’t feel proud driving a mixed breed, no offense. Just like when I built the k5 blazer, I preferred not to touch anything blue and oval.

My buddy teased me that by the time this build is done, the rig ain’t an fj40 anymore with so many parts from the 60. That’s true, but at least I can call it a mixed LC, all-LC-in-1, or best of LCs. It sure not gonna be chevota, landota, jeepota, or whatever you might call it. Not to mention, the look of fj40 is in my blood, and I only have money for 60 parts. 80 is too expensive. If I got the dough, I still prefer a souped up 40 than a stock 80.

Oh one important thing I should add, the best rig imo are: 1. The one you’re happy with, 2. The one with best parts from all over the world. To name a few, PSC, Atlas, Dana 60, Cummins 4BT sure aren’t Toyota! Hummer H1 wheel, Portal Axle. ohhh I want those..

Back to the shifter, I’m still looking for the 80 shifter. If out of luck, I will be torn between these two choices!

Mentioned the ’74 chevy blazer K5 made me miss it much. In memoriam to the built I no longer have, excuse me to put this pic. Reminisce the pic before I put on the 18/39 mickey tires. Sorry, it has nothing to do with the FJ built, but next time will.

Are you thinking of welding the holes in those wheels shut?
I wouldn't recomend it, you will get a lot of inbalance that will be hard to get out.

fj x8 If your looking for parts check up my neck of the woods in Bogor. Tons and tons of 40s 60s etc. Gotta love the prices for stuff here.

After all this work I think some cable lockers would go sweet with that 12ht and 60 series FF

yup, if i pick a locker it'll be cable from 60, or electric from 80. So far, I haven't been in a sticky situation that needs locker. Actually prefer Auburn LSD than the LS from stock 60 though. So I haven't decided yet. Auburn is quite expensive. Thanks for the input.

Hi there Perrymason. Where about in Bogor? I never been there for parts, it's good to know though. Stay alert and safe ok. Oh and flip the bezel sir. You did flip it around depends on the date picture taken.

Awesome build !

Subscribed

Thanks and if i could finish what i started. ;) You've gotta an amazingly nice rig. I'm really stunned when I read how you got the fj. That took more than guts. Thank god it's aussies you're dealing with.

Yeaahhh, I got what you mean, and slept on it. Woke up and decided to try it first on one wheel. That way, if things get ugly, it'll be the bad spare. Hope it won't turn out to be the constant reminder of how fool I am. Thanks for the feedback.

I generally go to suryakencana (that is soooo spelled incorrectly) for my service and mods. If i need any specialized parts for the fj there are quite a few shops around this area (one near Villa Dutta). There is one really big shop i saw on the way to Puncak and it had maybe 6 or 7 40s in the front... i plan to take a trip out there sometime. On the whole tho I have a parts finder guy who goes and gets me stuff for cheap because i am a bule. (and yes i flipped the bezel)

well, well, well... what do you know... you spelled it perfectly. Ohh Bule (translate: caucasian) does need a local buyer; otherwise, they will squeeze the bejezzus out of you. Still, bule finds everything cheap here huh... it's no suprise you could open up a hotel here with your Canadian dime... of course, i'm kidding!!

STEP 6: Trans Mounting
I can’t stand the traffic jam. Wherever you go, it’s jam. Sometimes, we’re talking about 2 miles per hour here. 8 mph is very common. Manual and auto has their own shares of pluses and minuses. But my dd has to be an auto A440F, eventhough not as tough as the 5 speed H55F, my main concern right now is my left leg. I just can’t have a shorter and bigger left leg!!
It was raining and what seemed like a drop or two got into the camera, and I couldn’t use it to take pics. These pics are taken a couple hours afterwards. We hanged the trans and used cut-up corrugated box as the mould before the steel. Oh I forgot to mention, for those who don’t know, since my engine choice is 12HT, the auto trans that came with it is A440F. This combo should came from ’88-92 HJ62.
