Not a flashlight, but a great camp/work light, I carry 3 of these.

As well as a battery pack to run a light seperate from the car if staying in a bush hut, or round the fire away from camp etc.
The battery pack has 2 seperate fused circuits, built in light, 2 acc plugs and 2 cig lighter plugs and built in jumper cables as well.

Think the Pirahna caravan would withstand the abuse of being hard mounted to the inside of the bonnet? Would be a nice addition to the beater edition if it did.

Found an energizer LED headlamp with tilt, red LED, white LED bank (2) running on 2 AAs for up to 50 hours.....$14.99...has a headstrap, etc and is too easy to chuck into the console.

Steamlight Poly Stinger is my all time favorite flashlight, the poly is nice as you can hold it with your teeth(metal and your off to see the dentist)
Also have a Steamlight Litebox, this is a bitching unit for working on cars, setting up camp or for power outages, it will run 8hours and puts out a big flood beam(or you can change lens, bulbs) You can also get the same thing in a version that turns on automaticly if your power goes out....very handy. Same unit as a off power companys use as well as Emergancy units.
also have a Ultra Stinger and one others, the Ultra is VERY powerfull,
Mag Lights make good door stops, I tossed all mine in a box after going to rechagrable Steamlights.
Headlamps are GREAT!
I havn't been real impressed with the LED I have used, just not enough light for me. I do use one(and I foget the brand) in my fj40 as a extra dome light, it clips on to my shelf and has a green bulb, works good in the cabin.
Also I have 1/2 dozen of the Brinkman's that are like a Steamlight Scorpian(I have 2 of those) the Brinkmans are nice and cheap, under $20 at Wal Mart with 2 batts(123 litiium) I keep one of these in each Cruiser.
I carry my Poly Stinger in my car bag and I bet I use it once a day if not more, by far my most used and best light I owned. Will be getting another one this weekend. I toss a Scorpian in my pocket at night, if out walking(yeah like that happends often)
Cool thing about the Steamlights they all use the same charger, even the Litebox used the same plug as the others use(just unplug from charger mount) I have had Zero problems with Steamlights and I have beaten the crap out of that Poly Stinger.

I use a streamlight stinger at work daily, prob. more than most people use a flashligh. I love it, battery life last forever, I dropped it several times, at times from a second floor and it hit concrete, and have never had an issue with it. It was hard to part with the $100 but it was well worth it. I love the size VS. a mag and at 15,000 CP it is BRIGHT.

a place in Tacoma, Sportco has the Poly Stinger w/charger for $70, in Olive drab. I get most my stuff at the local cop shop however. Nice thing is you can just buy the Stinger without the charger, I have 3 chagers and all my Steamlights use the same charger.

I did pick up a new headlamp yesterday, Princton Tech Yukon, can hit the swtich and use the LED or the Xenon, nice unit and I was pretty inpressed with the LEDs output, $28. Not wild about the battery pack on the back of the headband.

I've always been a big fan of Maglite. They've always been reliable and nearly indestructable. I own several from the mini to the "D" cell big Kahuna and keep 'em in my vehicles and around the house. That said, I recently bought a CMG Infinity Ultra from REI for $22. It's really a nifty palm sized LED. It's made of aluminum and has a place on the end to attach a lanyard. It thows off a lot off light, and the illumination is even, with no dark or hot spots. Very important when your trying to tie on a dry fly in low light conditions. I don't think I'll ever go back to a regular flashlight. I asked the guy at the hardware store where they have a large selection of Maglites when they were going to get into the 21 st century. He thought the company was kind of like the Swiss watch makers that wouldn't change when digital watches came out.
I also own a cheapo POS $7 LED flashlight that clamps to the brim of my hat. I only turns on and off when you twist the lens ring. It's come on and drained the battery when I didn't turn it far enough. Another time I turned it too far and the lens came off and dropped the batteries on the ground where I lost one of them. I guess you get what you pay for, but I still can't swallow $100.

LEDs do have some shortcomings, I've found. The shorter wavelength light causes more light flashback than any other type of light I've ever used in dust, rain or fog. In addition, they reduce depth perception because of the multiple points of light that wipe each other's shadows out. On our SAR team a couple guys bought them and really regret it as they're difficult to read tracks and sign with. I agree.
I also have an HID headlamp for rescue work and night rides on the bike. Its shorter wavelength has similar flashback, and seems to also flatten terrain shadows. It is so bright that even very high humidity can be seen in the air.
I'm not advocating a return to the conventional light, but it's worth considering a high grade halogen unit for many applications.

I have a combination Xenon halogen/LED headlamp that I love - the best of both worlds. It's a Black Diamon Gemini.
