Wow, Wayne, I remember seeing this thread back when I was just trolling IH8MUD. Must be good to finally see your investment at last, eh? Hopefully we get to see it after all the work. Cheers, man. :hillbilly:

not sure, i am seriously hoping it isn't a let down after all this time. i bought it back in Nov 2006 and to finally sit in it and turn the key in May of 2009 should be ... exciting.

once it is here then over the summer (as i can squeeze in time) i will post up the mods.

I thought this picture may be in the spirit of this thread, goodluck with your build :)

Hello Wayne,

Your 75 turned out to be more complicated than it seemed. Nice truck, by the way.

This may be off topic. A neighbor fitted his FJ75 with a bed much like Big Bob's photo and a half-ton, knuckle-type crane behind the cab to move service tools. The tuck looks great and the crane helps a lot.

I'll try to get a picture.

Now the dumb question. Have you thought about fitting a crane? My apologies if this seems off topic.

well, i am thinking of a dump so sticking a crane between the cab and the tilt could be arranged... first i have to decide if i will need a crane for anything...

yep, back to building a tray. alloy, similar to the one i had almost finished for the PZJ75. also have a few more ideas to try out.

should be fun.

Dont forget to build one of these into it;) Some of these go the full length of an 8' tray and have compartments with lids.
Some of the new factory trays are high enough to have sliding trays that will accomadate a tyre or 2.
Just a thought

i had a similar idea with the PZJ75 i built up, instead of 2 full length drawers it was 4 drawer system. 2 easy access, 2 hidden up front out of prying eyes...

the idea is a for sure... unless i go tilt bed.

Are you planning on driving it in the winter? If so I wouldnt add any more stuff to an aluminum deck than necessary. You put drawers under that thing and you will end up with a nasty looking salt stained and corroded deck and drawers. The salt slurry mixed with dirt will just vapourize and coat every nook and corner of it - would be a disaster in my opinion. Bad enough on my aluminum deck with nothing on it.

Also, there won't be much room for a crane if you put it on there, I find it tight with a 7 foot long bed as it is. Unless you are just planning on putting engines and smaller things on it. Not much useable space is what I am trying to say - unless you lengthen the frame.

Can't wait to see it though.

Hello Wayne,

This is not the neighbor's truck (not even a Toyota!) but the crane is the same. This truck's got it on the back, not behind the cab.

This crane does look good on a 75 or 79.

Just to give you an idea of the crane. Hope this helps.

the crane does give it a "working mans truck" look but i think i will pass.

Louis, i highly doubt that truck will see winter driving but thanks for the heads up about alloy and salt. i forgot what it is like to live back here in winter. if i do an alloy bed (which i am leaning towards) i will get the thing powder coated. alloy looks nice when new but once oxidized it looks ... old.

if i go tilt deck then i can't have drawers anyway.

welcome back to mud Louis.

the PZJ70 "Tractor" made its second run in Ontario with 4 X 60s there is a write up on page 2 and plenty of pics and vids.

.

I have yet to see alloy corrode from salt, they make fishing boats and even naval ships out of it.
More often its caused by adding incompatable metals to the alloy

It doesn't really corode as much as it discolours/stains and then looks like crap. Add brake grime/dust, salt spray/mud, and other carp and it is a nightmare. If any other metal touches it other than stainless you are in for a world or hurt. Then add a drawer with slide rails - grease them as much as you want you will still end up with drawers that look like and work like crap. All our fire trucks have aluminum sliding boxes with stainless hardwrae and they are all s*** now.

Come to canada and find out!

Nice looking runs! your truck needs more noise though - try the areoturbine and 3 inch exhaust:)

I need to do some work on my truck - the front ARB is pissing air - never ARB again.

Are you talking aluminium or aluminium alloy?
They maybe using the wrong grade of alloy .I see alloy trays used in the fishing/lobster fishing industry as well as their boats and they dont go to pieces like that.
Anyone knows it doesnt stay shiny new forever but it can be polished with a low speed buffer and metal polish.
Or you can paint them like the dealer

The sliders on alloy drawers are made from stainless steel and if they are failing its more to do with workmanship.

If you dont like alloy ,go with steel and lug another 150kg around and watch it flake away.

Mate, you need to come here and drive for a winter in heavy salt and calcium chloride dumped roads - no matter what you have it is going to look like s*** after a winter - after 5 it is really nasty looking.

The stainless and aluminum are top grade, but what happens to the drawer sliders is that you have to grease them often because of the salt wipes out the lubricant, so then you bog the lube to it - then the lube collects the salt and sand, then it compounds and builds. Then you have a massy slurry of salt, grease/oil, and sand that chokes up the bearings on the drawers and really discolours the aluminum, you need to see it to understand it I guess. Has nothing to do with workmanship, it is all about the materials/environment and s*** the put on the road. I'd love to have your environment.

Louis

The other type of tray we use is a fully dipped galvanised steel tray, but they look like old alloy when they are new.

salt and calcium is brutal here, the only way to keep a nice vehicle nice is to park it in Oct and revive it in May...
i drive a PZJ70 that i tell everyone is "my sacrifice vehicle to the rust gods". most think it is funny, i think it is the only way.

update:
shipping from Japan to Toronto $4200 (20 ft container)
customs inspection fee, ready for this? $925. WTF is that?

Money Pit.
