So I have a deal on a 1990 FJ62 chassis with everything...motor, tranny, new OME suspension, etc...ran great, body was taken off for another project...not a single wire or hose was cut when the 62 body was taken off. Has anyone heard of a transplant like this? I have a 72 piggie and was going to swap in some disc brakes, a 4 speed, etc..with the 62 I would have a wider stance, much newer frame and suspension, disc brakes, much newer motor with more power and fuel injection, 4 speed, etc etc etc.

Who else has done this?

Any thoughts?

Thanks all!

Timm

Hmm...some info:

FJ62:
Wheelbase 107.5 in.
Length 184.0 in.
Width 70.9 in.

FJ55:
Wheelbase 106.3 in.
Length 184.0 in.
Width 68.3 in.

Also might be easier to lift? Not many 55 lift options, a lot more for 62's.....

Do it... do it... do it....you'll cut stuff and weld stuff and adapt stuff....

this 62 has a manual transmission? Most came with the a440 auto. You can swap an h42 or H55F in between the engine and tcase. I got to drive my H42'd FJ62 for a couple of days before I had to get back into the Pig(wifes new 62 needs a water pump) Boy howdy, I got spoiled real quick in that thing. It rides sooooo well. I have to think there might be more natural body roll w/ the 55 cab on a 62 chassis, being a bit taller, but the PS and 20 year younger drivetrain parts are sooooo nice to work with in comparison to the 35+YO piggys rolling around out there. There will be welding and blasting tho for the body mounts....

sorry, forgot about the auto tranny. :)

it looks like a lot of the work will be the body mounts....would also want to source a few things that stayed with the body. like brake booster, power steering, etc

yes.^^

thanks Ige, your opinion means a heck of a lot!

you might consider swapping all the running gear onto your 55, less the automatic, of course. The fuel injection and power steering are to die for

I also have a thread going on the Rising Sun board....my point would be to have a cool DD 55 that can also take me on mild wheeling trips...not an every day driver....I have a Jetta TDI for commuting and a very well built 80 for real wheeling trips and expedition trips....I have plenty of time and shop room for this project...and my goal is to have a 55 with power steering, 4 speed (or auto), more power, more lift, a little more reliable, etc etc etc

that is kind of what some others are trying to talk me into...I could swap the 3f in (with auto tranny and tcase as one big unit?) then I could just swap over the disc brakes...rig up power steering...and be good to go....hmmmmm.......

Do it - if the 62 chassis is a lot cleaner then your 55 chassis

Not that hard to fab body mounts. That 1" in wheel base could easily be made up on the front end by cutting the front fenders similar to this:
