Too far north. Too far east.
Selling a pair of 4.10 ratio fine sopline third members from an 88 FJ62.

Are you sure they are 4.10? They should be 4.11 (37 ring/9 pinion) and no different than any other FJ60 diff.

FJ62's in the USA had 40/10..... 4.10's with fine spline pinions.

FJ60's in the USA had 37/10........3.70's with fine spline pinions.

FJ40's in the USA for the 1978 model year only had 37/9....4.11's and fine spline pinions

FJ40's in the USA for the 1979 model year and later had 37/10...3.70's, with fine spline pinions.

FJ40's in the USA prior to 1978 had 37/9....4.11's with coarse spline pinions...

I have a front diff from a 1989 FJ62 that I pulled this last weekend in the garage. The ring/pinion count came from that diff. :grinpimp:

Go count them again.....

When Toyota switched to the auto tranny in the 62, they also changed the RP ratio to 4.10. All 62’s had 4.10’s in the USA.

Yours would be the first that was not that way.....

The spline/pinion count

FYI-

The SPLINE count (27 on fine spline pinions, and 10 on coarse spline pinions) is where the companion flange is attached to the pinion, it has nothing to do with the number of teeth on the pinion.

I thought the switch was in 1991 with the first 80 series. This looks like another good trivia question to run to ground! My bet's on 37/9!

I've had a couple of '62 diffs apart. I'm pretty sure that they are 4.11:1 with the 4:10 coming in the '80 series along with the smaller front diff like the mini's (always 4.10:1). Not positive, but...

I'll be pulling another '62 rear apart in a few days. Definitely stock (original owner, never modded, only worked on by me for the last several years). I'll post up which ratio that is.

Mark...

I just pulled the R&P from my 87 HJ60 last weekend. The count was 37 and 10. I replaced them with the gears from my stock 1990 FJ62 which were 37 and 9. Hope that helps.

2 cents

more fuel for the fire...
i just replaced my rear ring and pinion in my 88 fj62 (us): 4.11 = 37 / 9 teeth.

the new 4.88 R&P from cruiser outfitters is 39 / 8 teeth.

The comment about the change in the FJ80s to 4.10 = 40 / 10 is what i've found correct...i owned a 92 fj80 (U.S.) and removed the rear diff cover for inspection and counted the teach just to see. that was the result.
