Hi, I'd love to get a little advice on an issue I'm having with my FJ60. Ever since I bought the truck, it's had an issue with power surging under high load. Specifically, the worst in 3rd gear @ 2000 RPM. I've done a couple things to try to correct it, as well as a shop, but the issue persists. I've had a shop look at it 4 times now (luckily for free, since I bought it from them and they felt bad that I immediately had the issue). But anyway, they have adjusted the timing and the carb float height, and both seem to have improved the issue, but not solved it completely. I took it for a test drive and took it up some really steep roads (that's what seems to cause the power surging the most). So anyway, it power surged once on the really steep hill, and once I got over it, it didn't happen again until maybe an hour later. And then it persisted, even on flat ground, for the rest of the drive home. I let it sit for 3 days, and the issue hasn't happened again (although I haven't taken it up anything nearly as steep). I know that the fuel level is supposed to be right in the middle of the sight glass on the carb at an idle, and the fuel level is where it should be at an idle after a cold start. But after it's warmed up, the fuel level will ride the bottom of the indicators on the sight glass. I'm pretty confident that it's some sort of a fuel issue. It has an aftermarket electric fuel pump rather than the stock mechanical one (some kind of Edelbrock fuel pump). Any insights to this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah it basically starts bucking, like it’s stalling.
It certainly does sound just like a fuel delivery issue. When mine does that surging (bucking) on an uphill under load I change the fuel filter and that usually fixes it. I do not run an electrical fuel pump. The OEM fuel pump seems to work fine with the carb. Why is there an electrical fuel pump?

Honestly not sure why it was changed to an electric pump, it’s just how it was setup when I bought it, I put a new fuel filter in it when I first bought it, but the issue has persisted. I’ve heard that there can be issues if the fuel pressure is too high. Supposedly the fj60 likes 2-3psi where as those electric pumps are usually 5-7psi maybe this could be the issue?
I'd not heard that about a Aisin carb, I had heard it was true for other carbs, perhaps the Webers. There is a fuel pressure reducing gizmo for those, maybe give that a try if you think it will help. I might think that if fuel pressure was too high, it would over-fill your float bowl. But your fuel bowl sounds under-filled.
Perhaps your PO put in the electric pump to fix the surging/bucking issue, didn't work and PO was lost so sold it. Personally, I would go back to the mechanical pump, re-assess and diagnose from there.

Any specific mechanical fuel pump you’d recommend?

You can pick up a cheap non oem version from parts stores to at least test and get it working. Then spend the money on an OEM Toyota at a later date that will last
