what the plus of the 6.5 diesel over 5.7 gas setup?
like her said torque mileage way less wiring. Durability. And here in Utah it makes me exempt for emissions :D

Low end torque/mpg/wvo/durability/no electronics
this one is electronic sadly but it's all plug and play and ten times less sensors then a TBI setup on a SBC

You can convert it back to all mechanical if you wanted, but I believe if you relocate the pcm to a cool place you eliminate one of the biggest problems on these engines.

yes I just rip the wiring out and put a mechanical 6.5 pump on which I thought about but I hear like you said the PMD is the biggest issue because it gets hot. The guy I got the truck foe replaced it before I got it so I was gonna run with it until it dies then get the relocating kit from ssdieselsupply

I got some work done today. Got the stock Chevy fan shroud to fit in there and got more of the front clip put together! Oh all stock radiator lines for the 6.5 work perfectly :hillbilly:

Also got my ranger ripped apart which I have never really been into but my suspicions paid off. All the bearings are cooked to hell and the front bearing retainer as you can see is broken and that nasty mud looking grease or whatever it is was inside everything. I'm glad I ripped into it and now time to replace all Bearings rebuild it and actually not hear it scream down the road :D

lookin good man thats gonna pay off real soon.

I can't buy the 6.5 or 6.2 is any more durable than a 5.7, I can agree the fuel mpg is better and the torque range is lower in the RPM range, but given the fuel price...and how much you drive it...will it pay off there...the additional range would be nice if you drive it much. I don't know the torque number for the 6.5 or 6.2. Both engines were not "all-stars" in the gm pickup line back in the day. Not here to argue about all of that that is the truth, many GM pickup owners had the 6.2 and 6.5 removed for a gas hog v8 replacement. As noted depends on what you have 6.2 or 6.5 in regard to electronics.. I can confirm the 6.2 and 6.5's are diesels so that's a plus for some people I guess :).

A number of guys have them... two guys in my local club. it it works well for you then that's all that matters, good you got the donor truck. I think there are some known mods to both engines to make them more dependable than they work back when they were built. You might want to look into some additional sound insulation....the engines are loud.

I will be the first to agree with you that these are not all stars in trucks. I personally think it was stupid in a truck however in a Landcruiser that will never see a trailer behind it and weighs less then the truck. It's perfect. And more durable in ways and less in some. And as for paying off in mileage or any aspect it's not even on my mind I figure if I were to be smart with money I wouldn't own a cruiser :D it's all for the fun of what I'm using it for. The 6.2 swap I did he pulls down a crazy 23mpgs. I was personally sick of the v8 I did it mostly because it cost me nothing and at the time anything beat my 2f. I do wish 6.2/6.5s were built more like a diesel. Being a roller valve train no timing chain and can handle more heat. The 6.5 can only handle 215 degrees. Past that they crack heads

The 6.2/6.5 isn't really super durable in a 3/4 ton work truck but works fine in lighter duty applications. I've seen quite a few with an awful lot of miles on them when not worked hard. They were intended to be more fuel efficient rather than powerhouses.
I agree on the 5.7 though, hard to beat that engine!

Not much progress the last two days I got a new front bearing retainer ordered and bearings it's should all be here tomorrow morning so after work it will get a nice rebuild and fresh paint

looks good so far. The fan shroud looks like a great fit. Are you planning on running A/C?

thanks! It took some trimming but it fit great after. No a/c motor didn't come with a pump or option on this truck which doesn't bother me. I don't care if I have it being I run half doors in the summer :hillbilly:

I got a little done today. I started labeling and pulling my stock and aftermarket harnesses to the drivers side being both dual batteries will be on that side. Not much done but still something

I don't know about that particular kit, but when I looked into this for a friend what I mostly found was that they were just a fairly simple bracket, the wiring loom is long enough as-is to move the PMD out of the heat and up into some airflow.

I haven't really read up much on how to do the mod. Do I move this whole piece or is it just a sensor I move or what?
