I am just seeing if anyone has an opinion, I am making my own snorkel with an air plenum (carbed 350) Are there any negatives to putting the filter on top instead of in a box inside.
here are the pros and cons in my opinion please correct me if im wrong

pros: no big box under hood, no box to leak if not sealed correctly

cons: no ram jet affect, ugly

Would there be water issues? I am planning on running 4" pipe because my plenum has a 4" opening and at the top of the pipe putting a tight 90 and the filter facing forwards (k&n type or something like it)

I'd consider pre-cleaner on top and filter element in the engine bay.

I agree with Alexjet and thats what I have set up on my 40

I am finding it difficult to find a box or tube that will house a filter big enough for a carbed 350 any pics?

X2... Don't get rid of the filter in the engine bay. Use a Donaldson pre-cleaner on top of the snorkel.

Btw, who sells Donaldson pre-cleaners?

If you call Donaldson they can email you a tech sheet so you know what you need and they will tell you who sells them locally. Real nice people IMO. I went with the 10" on my rig and I love it!

Hey check out the universal river raider airbox. It is big enough to house a filter for a 350. Here it is installed in my 40

Here's a pic of the Donaldson on my 4Runner.

Is it a 7" version (H002437)?

And the 4Runner one looks like 10", if I'm not mistaken (H002425)...?

The only setup I could find would be around $700 for a box and filter for 650cfm and it would be difficult to fit under hood. So does anyone have any cons other than ascetics for external filter?

does anyone run that river raider on a 350? it seems like the flow would be to low

Yes it is a 10"... I have a V8 4.7L and I wanted to be sure to get plenty of air! Works fine and it seems to shift smoother actually.

Honestly Daniel, I'm not quite sure. I can shoot Kevin a pm and see what it is. When you purchase his snorkel he gives you the option of buying one from him so I did

Alright I just called river raider and they assured me it wouldn't be an issue so I think I found a nice inexpensive solution to the problem. Thank you to all that posted this. For others looking into this issue if anyone has any insight on mounting the filter on the stack please chime in.
