Jeez this seems like a great idea and I would be very interested if I didn't have a full roll cage. I live in NJ and I only have a soft top. While I haven't driven it in the winter yet, I would imagine that there is no way that the soft top is going to cut it and a half cab would be a whole lot easier to heat. I would also need doors too. *sigh*

Actually I drove mine one winter make that one cold Canadian winter when it was still soft top. The PO had installed a heater in the back it heated it real good. The heater was Canadian made and it used the engine coolant just like the eom rear heater. There is no name stamped on it, but I have seen similar heater on classic heaters. It had 3 speed fan. Maybe I will post a pic of it when I get a chance .

Good thing to hear as I do have a rear heater. :) Actually I have a few spares in the storage space so I could actually put a second rear one in there if needed.

So what ever happend with this? Any updates? I would LOVE to have a 1/2 cab. I have even considered cutting down my hardtop, but I may want use it again some day.

I have also seen a couple of posts of 40s with 1/2 soft tops. This would be really cool as well.

Darby Darrows here on MUD has one for sale in the Parts for sale section. He is moving to Oregon or Washington and looking for a hardtop.

Here is the thread.

Yes...constructive criticism and likes/dislikes are welcome. I had nothing to do with the plug as it sits now so I can't take any credit/abuse for how it looks....I'm only interested in pursuing this if I can make people happy and give them what they want. If I need to modify the plug and mold so that it looks just like it should have come from the factory, then that's what I'll do.

The more I look at stock tops compared to the current plug, the more I realize I'll need to make some modifications...which I'm open to doing.

Thanks again for the input.

Ian

Not sure if you're still pursuing this. My suggestion would be to make it a reproduction 45 top with an optional bolt on lower panel to make it work on a 40. That way it increases the potential market. But it would have to look close to factory correct. Lots of 45's out there with rusty steel tops.
Maybe make an extended cab option, talk to aqualu about making it fit their extended 45 cab.
Good luck.

I made my own - see the ROTW link.

I put an extra 4" into it and that's really only just long enough.

Owners of 'stock' 45 cabs can chime in but I recall having seen lots of listings about problems with head room, leg room etc in the std cab because Toyota made it just a bit too short...

So I'd strongly recommend making a product going 4" over a std 45 cab

but a great idea - go for it!

:D

From what I understand, there are different size FJ45 Cabs.

The FJ45 SWB Non- removable Top is about 3" smaller than an FJ45 LWB with a removable top.

When you start measuring, make sure you measure the right one you want to start with.
