I have a 1965 FJ40 with a front differential cover that is welded to the axle housing. Is this normal for the older FJs? Is it better to replace this housing so as to have future access to the gears?

IIRC all the front axles are essentially the same; you have access to the gears but it requires removal of the axle shafts and removal of the diff from the axle housing.I have a 1965 FJ40 with a front differential cover that is welded to the axle housing. Thanks everyone. I’m a Jeep CJ guy, adding an FJ to the fleet. I wanted to make sure before I spent a lot of time on the axle.
