FJ40 front differential cover

I have a 1965 FJ40 with a front differential cover that is welded to the axle housing. Is this normal for the older FJs? Is it better to replace this housing so as to have future access to the gears?

The C-clip rear axles are the only ones with removable covers

IIRC all the front axles are essentially the same; you have access to the gears but it requires removal of the axle shafts and removal of the diff from the axle housing.

Some have been known to make a front housing out of a rear when doing a SOA & cut-n-turn as to have said removable cover on the front.

FYI the FJ25 has a removable cover on the front diff. Would have to check a early 1961 front axle I have but pretty it's welded. All front axles are full floating axles. The full floating rear axles the back cover is welded on.

Congrats. We have drain plugs as well, unlike most Dana axles.
